Student finance when deferring

I haven't applied for deferred university entry but am almost definitely planning on deferring until 2026 when I get my place. Should I apply for student finance now or wait until next year? I don't know if I would have to cancel it if I defer or not and if that would be difficult.

If there’s even the slightest chance that you will end up starting university this autumn (for example if things don’t to plan and you end up finding a place through clearing) then it’s best to apply for finance now.
It’s very simple to cancel (in fact nothing will be paid if you don’t enrol on a course) but it’s very longwinded to apply for finance at the last minute (and risks you ending up without any loan paid at the start of your course on top of ending up at university earlier than planned)

Good advice, thank you! Would you say the same thing is the case for applying for accommodation?

In some cases yes but for accommodation it’s vital to read the cancellation terms and conditions to check that you won’t end up losing a non refundable deposit or paying a high cancellation fee.
