Should I crash higher physics in s6?

Hi,
I've done national 5 maths, national 5 applications of maths in S4 and i got As in both, and right now in May i'll sit my higher maths exam which i'm predicted a lower a/higher b in, I kind of want to take higher physics in s6 but I haven't done nat 5 and am wondering if there's a big difference between nat 5 and higher physics and wether it'll be too difficult to crash higher physics?

Hi @jarrkot 🙂 Do you know what you'd like to do after school yet? If you do, that might help in keeping your highers relevant to your goals.

I'd say if you're strong in Maths and your school is letting you crash the higher then they'll have considered whether it's suitable for you, and therefore you'd be ok to go for it - but be prepared to maybe do some additional study in the first instance to bring yourself up to speed. Once your current higher exams are done, you could start looking in to some of the Nat 5/Higher Physics content and past papers to see what you think over the summer.

Which other highers are you sitting this year, and what else are you thinking of taking in S6?

thanks! this year I'm also sitting higher human bio and chemistry, the reason I'm thinking of crashing physics is because I either want to do biochemistry in uni or biomedical engineering and I'd need physics for biomedical engineering. What I take in S6 depends on what I get in my highers but at the moment I want to take crash higher physics, advanced biology, and either advanced chemistry or advanced maths

Hi @jarrkot 🙂 In that case I'd say if your highers go to plan this year and you're able to take the higher Physics then go for it. Then at least if you decide to pursue Biomedical Engineering your options are open. Equally if you start the higher and don't enjoy it then that's ok - and maybe helps in determining what you're like to do at uni. They sound like good choices overall!

Good luck with your exams!

Hey! - Just thought id add on to Caitlin since I crashed higher physics in S6, its definitely doable! - there were some parts of the course which I just had to have a bit of a refresh on the content previously covered in the N5 (: - you can always speak to your teachers about this and I'm sure they wont mind spending a bit of extra time with you on anything from N5 that might make it confusing to build on for higher.

I took higher physics when some stuff was still expent from the course (around covid time) so cant really comment on the assignment part of the course! - I was also in a pretty similar position to you with having done higher maths, biology & chemistry beforehand and found it okay (: - from maths I was comfortable with rearranging formula's and the exam paper was split into the same mutli-choice & long written answers as the chem/bio papers so found I was using a lot of similar exam techniques and time management to these when approaching the paper.

Makes sense to pick it up if you feel you may require for your entry requirements!, even if not and you have all your entry requirements attained gives you something extra, also lets you explore if you would enjoy something revolving physics before starting university.

Good luck!!, hope this helps out 🙂
