Assess the extent to which rising costs of raw materials may have led to the failure
of JE Wilson & Sons Ltd.

mark this 10 mark question in the same way. question- Assess the extent to which rising costs of raw materials may have led to the failure
of JE Wilson & Sons Ltd. ... answer- Rising costs, such as the increase in sugar prices, may have led to business failure. This is because net profit margins may have decreased, due to higher costs, and declining sales of the Kendall mint cake . this means the bakery business is obtaining less profit, hence less cash inflows occur. This is in addition to the already very serious cash flow problems, which they are facing due to moving to the new factory. The bakery may undergo serious liquidity issues, and may have a lack of working capital for day-to-day business activities, such as wages for bakers . eventually, the business may not be able to pay for all their costs, leading to business failure. However, moving to the new factory in 2013 may have caused sudden changes in working practises. This may have caused the demotivation in employees when creating sugar based confectionery's .absenteeism and staff turnover may have risen, and the business may not be able to find new staff.
However, poor capacity utilisation may have caused business failure, rather than rising costs . after moving to the new purpose built factory in 2013, poor capacity utilisation had happened. This may have decreased their average cost per unit when creating products like the Kendall mint cake. This means the break even unit may have been increased, from the previous 5000 units sold . this increases their chances of making continuous losses, and may further deplete their funds. However, rising costs for ingredients, such as flour, means the business may have looked for lower quality alternatives. Customer satisfaction may decrease due to poor quality, and sales may have folded. Gross profit margins may have decreased.
To conclude, it all depends when the amount of sales happening for the sugar based confectionery's . this is because if sales are high, due to loyal customers, then high costs can be coped and handled. However, products like the Kendal mint cake, which is what the company is most famous for, has been seeing a declining amount of sales. Trends in the wider confectionery market have led to lower demand for high sugar content products. This means enough revenue may not be made to cope for high rising costs, and continuous losses may have been made.
