Brutally Honest Dentistry Advice PLS

I’m a gap year applicant with a 3000+ band 1 ucat and achieved A*A*A grades. last year i got no offers so I reapplied this year. I got rejected pre-interview from liverpool, rejected post-interview from Leeds and put on the waiting list at sheffield and Manchester. I’ve had a think and dentistry is still the only career i see myself doing but taking a second gap year isnt something i see myself doing but at the same time i dont want to waste my grades on something i dont want to do. any help or advice of any sort is very welcome!

Would you be able to go through the clearing process for any uni for dentistry? Your grades sound very good, so I think it could be a matter of what you have on your personal statement and how interested you are in dentistry overall. If it gets down to you taking another gap year, I suggest you touch up your personal statement with extra activities etc.. that show your interest in dentistry, something that perhaps stands out.

on the waiting list at sheffield and Manchester.

So you still have a chance of an offer.
Dont give up hope.

1) Dentistry doesnt go into Clearing - that is what 'waiting lists' are for.
2) The OP was interviewed at several Unis. There is therefore nothing wrong with their PS.

i think your only barrier to the dental school is the interview itself, I think take that one more gap year otherwise you will regret it, you wont regret a 2nd gap year even if u are unsuccessful because then you will know for sure u did everything you could. Apply strategically to unis w a high post interview success rate. Your ucat was very high and is why liverpool rejected u so be sure to do proper research. Also this year sheffield gave offers without interview to ppl who reapplied after being on waitlist so uts very likely that you will get a place without having to reinterview if u reapply to sheffield. Ask for interview feedback. I did manchester interview twice and was successful when i realised what they were looking for, they want someone who can have a conversation and is eager and interested in dentistry, they dont necessarily want you to know everything but they want someone who is genuinely interested and not robotic which is what i found - if you're enjoying the interview, it is going well i'd say. Also do research into what unis allow you to reapply for a third time. if there are any that you have applied to twice - dont waste an option if they clearly state they dont accept your circumstances. I underatand its difficult and you feel like you are wasting another year but i know plenty of people who start dental school at 20+ and some post grads who start the process as well. Many people do other courses but eventually they come back so its all about your mentality. Dont give up i hope it goes well. Also consider studying abroad as a final option.

Oh okay my mistake then I didn’t think dentistry was similar to medicine in that sense. Apologies

I think if you were to take another gap year, it might be worth it however at the same time you need to weight up your options.
If you really want to do dentistry, perhaps study abroad for a similar value of tuition fees e.g bulgaria or if you’re better off then spain. But personally if you want to resit the ucat again and then resend another ucas application you’re just giving out money and what if you dont get in again but with those stats I really don’t see any problems. It may of been your personal statement potentially?
Being on the waitlist at the same time isnt a bad thing, you may be surprised on results those who are in year 13 may of not got the grades they wanted so you would be in a hopeful position.
Maybe speak to your parents and see if studying abroad is something you want to do or wait it out till results day to see if those who waitlisted you give you a chance but honestly thats really stupid, a ucat of 3000 b1 should be an immediate offer realistically to any dental university but who knows these days.

ideally id rather not want to take another gap year, but I also don’t want to give up on dentistry since it’s the only field I genuinely want to go into.
If I do reapply again tho (which after reflection im not entirely against) I’ll definitely take your advice and find more ways to strengthen my personal statement with further experiences or activities. Just holding out and hoping something works out this year still.

Thank you so much this was really helpful to read. You’re right, if I do end up taking another gap year, I want to be sure I’ve given it everything. I hadn’t heard about Sheffield giving offers to previous waitlist applicants without another interview so I’ll look into that. I also wasnt aware of liverpool favouring lower ucat scores until after applying which is my fault for wasting a uni spot like that.

I’ll definitely look into getting feedback and researching which unis allow a third application. And you’re right about the interviews too I think I got better as I went through them, so hopefully that experience helps if I have to try again. Really appreciate your advice and encouragement

I agree, it’s hard to accept how unpredictable the process can be, especially with (what i thought to be) strong stats. it made me realise that this course is alot more than just good grades. I’ll definitely wait it out for results day and see what happens with the waitlist before making any big decisions like studying abroad or taking another gap year but im trying to an open mind in case things dont go my way. Thanks for the sdvice

What was liverpools reasoning

i wasnt given any specific reasoning and said that i couldnt ask for feedback on my application. but i believe its to do with liverpool not favouring applicants with high ucat scores (possibly to keep their ’average ucat for interview’ low) because i have three other peers with 3000+ ucats that have been rejected from liverpool pre-interview

You've done brilliantly to get an interview (or did you have 3?) especially with none the first time.

I'm sorry you weren't shortlisted for interview, but unless there is published evidence to the contrary, please don't rely on hearsay eg Liverpool not favouring high UCAT scores.

Liverpool has very detailed published admissions information. It's clear that the shortlisting relies not just on UCAT, but also references and the personal statement
"The Personal Statement is assessed to ensure that the applicant has knowledge of and insight into the profession with emphasis on work experience/observation. Evidence of a caring attitude and awareness of the values embedded within the NHS constitution is also sought. Applicants must demonstrate motivation and commitment to a career in dentistry. Candidates are expected to show a range of skills and it is desirable on all dental programmes that candidates have completed a period of work experience/shadowing in a local dental practice or hospital and preferably in more than one establishment."

If you are planning to reapply- and if you really want to be a dentist, 1 year is nothing in your long life, so please do- get a job in either a dental practice as a trainee dental nurse, or in a dental lab, or a dental materials or supplies company if you're near one. Or something in healthcare or the care system. Then you unequivocally show motivation and commitment, and you will make a far better dentist than UCAT can ever 'measure'. And you'll have money and more to talk about at interview. Y12/13/14 work experience is always coated in glory compared to the real world of a tough day in clinic.

Apply strategically, use your resilience and reflection on the reapplication in your persona statement. Is there a reason all your choices this time were in the Northern half of England?

But if it's not for you, try to move on and find something else that interests you. Biomed engineering? Research? Engineering? Materials Science? You have the grades.

Dr Suess put it even better "You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose".

Good luck with whatever you do.
