Autism diagnosis

I am thinking about paying to get an autism diagnosis. I'm 18 and doing alevels ATM. I was wondering if
getting a diagnosis is worth it?

If you can answer the question, how do you intend to make your diagnosis help you, then I think you have answered your first question.
Is it by making your in school life easier, or do you need accomodations for the finals?

What i would be thinking about is whether you think you will need support during what you do after a levels. During sixth form and college, schools are able to make reasonable adjustments with no experience. At uni you’ll need a diagnosis to get stuff like DSA and adjustment plans from the uni in most cases. In the workplace, it can help to have evidence of a disability if you require assistance.

I would say while it obviously doesn't change who you are, when I got my diagnosis it made it so much easier to get support and explain to people why I am struggling.

I would personally say that I didnt think that a diagnosis would help me however after i recived the diagnosis it allowed me to feel better about myself and know how to help myself. it also allowed me to access more accomadations and help. overall i feel it just allowed me to accept myself and feel less different and like i wasnt accepted in society, it allowed me to understand myself better.
however i do understand that it is expensive and not everyone can afford it.

Is there any reason why it wasn't diagnosed earlier?

Mostly masking, and my family didn't know a lot about autism or ADHD. By the time my mum said she thinks I'm autistic I was 17, and asked if I want a diagnosis at 18 (past time I can get help from school)

Did your school not pick it up?

Nope, I used to go see the councillor about other issues but she thought I had OCD because I'm hyper organised and have a fear of being late. But my friends picked up on it, and I was bullied a lot for being "strange" and annoying

What I would suggest is that you go for a diagnosis. If you are diagnosed as autistic you can decide whether to reveal that or not.
