Southampton or Sheffield?

I'm deciding between these 2 universities for this year. If anyone has experience or knows someone in these unis, please share with me your experiences! Also, I want to know how the societies, social life and night life in these 2 unis differ?
Thanks!

I study at Sheffield. It is a larger city and certainly feels like a student city. There are plenty of bars for the night life, the SU itself has a bar and a club which get popular Wednesday and Friday nights. It has lots of parks near uni that get very busy with people hanging out with friends when it is warm. The SU has loads of sports clubs and societies - you will definitely find at least one that you enjoy. Sheffield uni campus does feel more in the city and the facilities are excellent.

Hey jaygoesuni, 👋

It's great to hear you are considering the university of Sheffield. What course is it you're interested in?

The societies are amazing and there are so many to choose from. With over 300 societies and over 50 sports clubs, there are hundreds of ways to make friends and build communities! I was part of the Stitch Society during my undergraduate and it was a great chance to catch up with people on different courses with a coffee and something to make or mend! A lot of societies will also host events called 'Give it a go' which give you the chance to try a new society and the kinds of activities they get involved in. 🎨🎭️🧵

The night life is amazing in Sheffield. Whether you prefer the Student's union bar and club, or hitting the town and having a drink and dance at Bierkeller or Molly Malones (an Irish bar). There are lots of clubs and bars to choose from, both in the city centre and just outside of. For instance, Eccleshall road, which is near Endcliffe accommodation, has some amazing food and drink places! 🍕

There are so many opportunities to get involved and to meet with new people both on your course and people on completely different degrees.

If you have any specific questions about living or studying in Sheffield, please let me know and I'll do my best to help! 😊

All best wishes,
Phoebe 😀

Hi there!

I know you are planning on going to Uni of Sheffield, but I thought you might still want to hear about my experience here in Sheffield!

I really like it here and think that the nightlife is great! I like going to west street which is a street with lots of bars and clubs which is really popular with students. It is always lively and every night is fun there!

There are also lots of other great bars and pubs across the city which are also really popular with students and other people who live in Sheffield. I think a Sheffield night out is great and is affordable too.

There are also lots of great pubs near the student areas such as Broomhill and Crookes which are again real popular and great for a nice drink with friends or on a sunny day.

The UoS student night is great too and really popular.

I hope some of this helps 🙂

Hi @jaygoesuni

Southampton is very enjoyable place to study. There are over 200 societies on offer. These cover a wide range of topics, from academic ones to musical ones to sport ones. If there is one you feel you would like that is not offer, you can always create one! The Student Union has its very own bar - Stags. They host Karaoke there regularly. The Student Union also hosts a variety of club nights. They also host events throughout the day.

There is alot on offer if you are interested in Sport. The University has the Jubilee Sports Centre on campus with a variety of facilities on offer such as swimming pool, gym and squash courts. The membership can also be used for the Mayflower Gym. The University also has its free sports initiative BeActive which allows you to try out sports for free.

In terms of nightlife, there alot of bars and clubs throughout the city. In particular, Portswood is a popular area for students, which is nearby to campus. There is also alot available in the city centre.

It is very easy to navigate the city, especially as the city is very walkable. It is also easy to take the bus. If you choose to stay in University owned Halls of Residence, you will get a free bus pass, therefore, can travel around the city for free.

There is also alot to do in the City throughout the day. For example, there is large shopping centre in the city centre. You can also view historical sites such as the old city walls. There is also an Art Gallery and museums available to visit. Moreover, you can also view the sea. Southampton has alot of green space too. In particular, the Southampton Common, which is 365 acres of woodland and open space, is nearby to the main campus.

Hope this helps,

Hi @jaygoesuni

I’ve seen that Gulcin has already answered you but I thought I would share my personal experience as well!
As Gulcin has already said Southampton is a very enjoyable place to study. For me I wanted to live somewhere similar to home that’s quite green and not too busy. Southampton’s the ideal city if you’re looking for a place that isn’t too crazy like a big city and has it’s fair share of green spaces (the Common is a very large green space in the middle of Southampton that’s absolutely perfect for doing picnics on).
Societies wise I’m part of three societies: rowing, crocheting and knitting, and the geography society. All the societies I’ve joined have been amazing ways to socialise with people and just basically get out there. Sports societies usually do a lot of socials (sometimes a mixture of sober and drinking socials), which is usually on a Wednesday and most people end up in Fishies (at District) or at Jesters usually.
I personally think the nightlife is very good in Southampton and a lot of it is catered towards the large student population. There are a lot of student nights, such as Glam Thursday when they do giveaways and Sobar Tuesday’s where they do £1 doubles (just to name a few).

I don’t know how Sheffield will compare but the best way to always find out is through open days! If you ever get the chance to go to one make sure you do!
But I hope this has helped and if you want to know anything about a specific course you’re interested in then let us know and hopefully a student ambassador can give a little insight into that too!

Hi, 👋

Sorry to hear you are having issues booking your room! Have you had a response yet from the accommodation office?

If not, I would recommend retrying to book your room and if it still won't let you add it, I'd suggest sending a follow up email to [email protected] or even giving them a call on +44 114 222 4488 (option 2).

Please let me know if you experience any more issues and I will see if I can help further.

All best wishes,
Phoebe 😀
