No jobs in radiography? Can I switch courses?

Hi, I’m a first year radiography student, and I find my course really fun an enjoyable, even though sometimes placement can be rough and stressful. I was always told that radiography is an in-demand career and that I’ll be guaranteed a job as soon as I graduate.

However, recently I learned that our third years, who are on placement with us, are really struggling to find jobs. Also, last years qualified radiographers also really struggled to find jobs. This year, Leeds, Chesterfield and Hull are hiring, but they are only taking 1 or 2 people in. This means that the qualified radiographers from last year as well as the radiographers that are graduating this year, will have to compete for the very limited positions.

I also heard there were around 1,000 applicants for the Leeds role, which was only taking on one radiographer. One of our 3rd years, who is a more mature student, had to apply for a job in her previous role because she was unable to get a job in radiography and didn’t want to stay unemployed.

After hearing this, I am really regretting my choice and I am worried I won’t find a job when I qualify. I am considering studying orthotics at uni of Sheffield instead. But I’m not sure how I’d go about switching my course? Also I’ve received student finance for this year too, so is it too late to change my course?

I can't see a course for orthotics at Sheffield uni - do you mean orthoptics?

At the moment there’s an issue with recruitment for newly qualified healthcare workers. So that’s covering nursing, midwives, radiographers, ODPs etc. it’s a budgeting issue. So it’s not a lack of jobs for people who have already got experience… it’s due to them not having capacity for newly qualified roles. You’re only in your first year and that could change very quickly. If you want to be a radiographer, please stick with your course. There’s also other places that take on other than the NHS so all isn’t lost.
