Degree choice as an international student: History joint honours

hello all!! i hope you’re doing well!

i’m having a bit of a struggle in terms of degree choice. i’m thinking of applying to irish universities for history and politics (i’m EU/italian citizen) but i’m uncertain if it’s worth doing the history with politics if i don’t plan on living in my own country, especially in terms of job prospects. i’m planning on going on to do a master’s anyway, but I wanted to ask if this would be a wise decision? I know for sure I’d like to study history as a joint honours, but yeah, just wanted to enquire about politics as well.

thank you so much!!! look after yourselves and have a wonderful day :-)

I did history and languages. I think doing a joint honours degree is a great idea, you get all the job prospects of both degrees - no one will consider you ‘half’ as much a historian and someone who did straight history. The caveat is that it’s more difficult as you need to get to the same standard in each subject as people who will be doing it full time.

Hi there,

I’m in my final year studying International Relations and Arabic at SOAS, and and would definitely recommend a dual degree because of the variety it offers!

If you’re drawn to Politics but unsure, International Relations (IR) could be a great alternative. It falls under the broader Politics umbrella but focuses on global themes like security, international law, human rights, political economy, and development. The flexibility lets you tailor the degree to your interests—whether that’s conflict resolution, trade, or governance.

Last term, I took an open module in History and loved how it overlapped with IR. Both subjects share analytical approaches—critical thinking, research methods, and even some content (like how political events shape histories, and vice versa). So I think a History and Politics/IR combination could complement each other really well while keeping your studies diverse.

I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions!
