Sheffield or Manchester for psychology

I really like both unis but each of their pros are very different to each other, I'm really struggling where to pick and what matters the most. At Sheffield I'll be studying just psychology while at Manchester (university of) I'll be studying cognitive neuroscience and psychology as a joint honours.
Manchester pros:
- LOVE the course, hopefully means I will have more career options if I don't choose a career in psychology (right now I want to be an educational psychologist but I know it is very very competitive)
- more of a 'prestigious' uni
- I would love to study abroad in South Korea which I can do at Manchester, although I don't know if doing a placement year would be better
Manchester cons:
- much more expensive than Sheffield
- little bit worried about the safety of the city. I do like it there though
- accommodation is apparently not great
Sheffield pros:
- love the feel of the city and the university
- much cheaper
- although I can't study abroad where I want to go they do also have a placement year
sheffield cons:
- lower on rankings
- still like the course but prefer manchester's
basically I prefer Manchester's course however I would prefer to live in Sheffield so I'm very stuck :frown: any advice would be appreciated

Set aside rankings and prestige, the criteria are not always objective.

Year abroad and placement year are definitely good to your personal development and future career.

I personally would prioritise course over city for uni. Both Manchester and Sheffield are easily accessible to and from other parts of the country. Living costs will be dictating if you are stretching to your limits. If you could compromise why not follow your course preference? Good Luck.

Hi

I studied at the other Manchester Uni (MMU), and I have lived in the city centre for about 8 years now. There is a mixture of student accommodation in the city centre - Vita have some recently built amazing buildings, and they are quite trendy because the owner owns one of the local football teams (Stockport County).

The city is relatively safe, I would avoid areas like Piccadilly Gardens at night, and students have been targeted in Fallowfield in the small hours before. I love Manchester though, we often go for strolls around Ancoats in the early hours and it feels safe 99% of the time.

Have you attended open days for both? They do make a big difference.

Manchester is very popular with students, hence why there are the three big universities, an Arden campus, and also Edge Hill have a campus for paramedics a few streets away from each other.

Hiya,

As Marc from Arden Uni suggested, I would definitely suggest that you go to an open day so that you can hear more from people studying at the university and how they feel about the course. Also you mentioned doing a study abroad and the University of Sheffield also has these opportunities available over the summer so you can still do a study abroad and also do a year in industry for the next year.

I hope that helps - let me know if you have any more questions about Sheffield!
