Three year residency rule

Hello! I've received a home status conditional offer from Bristol for BSc Biology for 2025-2026 Im now looking at applying for student loans. Im a UK citizen, UK passport, born in UK and I've been back living in the UK for the past 2 yearsWe did however live in Spain for 3 years prior due to my Father's teaching job- temporary contract. I've read online that I need to have been living in UK for 3 years to be eligible to get a student loan. I've also heard that UK citizens who have a house in UK ( which we do) and were living in an EU country previously would be eligible for student tuition and maintenance loans (parents income dependent). Can you shed some light on the situation and/or point me in the right direction of any information to help clarify the situation? Who would be able to give me a definitive answer and how do I make sure the right info goes onto my HMRC application for student loans. Many thanks in advance for your help. Amber

Hi Amber,

If you apply for finance now, we can then confirm for definite if you would be eligible or not. Based on what you have advised you should be, but again apply now by making an account and submitting an application for 25/26. We may ask for temporary evidence you were outside the UK, this can be evidence of your parents temporary contracts/visas etc. The team will review and confirm for definite.

Thanks,
Claire
