Higher English Critical Essay

Hi all, I am doing a critical essay on The Godfather (film/TV drama). Does anybody have any tips for the final exam? Should I learn an essay off by heart or just certain key scenes/techniques? Is it ok to just learn the use of the techniques instead of quotes (our teacher gave us a model essay, where techniques are discussed but no quotes)?

There is less than 3 weeks to the final - I am aiming to get at least 15/20, any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hello!
For my critical essays in the past I've done plays and I would just revise the key scenes, techniques and quotes! You would need the name, author, setting, time etc for the introduction but looking at them a few times worked just fine for me. I've personally never written a critical essay without quotes but it's best to do what your teachers told you or shown you!

Hi, I am also doing the godfather. I have got a good essay for the hospital sequence that uses techniques like lighting and camera angles as well as dialogue. Should I remember just the one essay for a certain sequence or also an essay on the whole film (wedding, hospital, restaurant, baptism and the final office scene)???. from looking at past questions (post covid) they have all worked for the hospital scene perfectly, and the ones for the whole film have also been good i have just never done an essay for the whole film.

Honestly I was thinking the same thing as well. I don't really know but the only year that didn't have one that would fit hospital scene was 2017 (from time period 2015-2024). I am doing the hospital scene as well for my essay. How long is yours? Because I think mines is way too long.

Hello! I'm also doing The Godfather, and I was really struggling with my Hospital sequence essay, so I decided to switch to a Michael Character Essay as it's easier to analyse and link to the questions, I think you should learn the evidence/key scenes and analyse it in the exam, but revise a bit more of your analysis before the exam, hope this helps!!
