The Birmingham bin strike

As most people will have heard, there is a bin strike in Birmingham, which is still on going.
What is your opinion?

I think it is ridiculous but happy to be educated on the intricacies of the strikes.

@2WheelGod probably agrees with it.

I dont know the full ins and outs of the story.
I agree that they should be able to have a fair wage/wage increase. It not the most glamorous job that most people would want to do. But i do think its gone on too long now and could do with sorting sooner rather than later.

Yes, i agree. It is becoming an environmental problem. It makes no sense that the Council cannot hire private bin collectors to take away the waste whilst they negotiate with the main workers.

It's against the law to hire replacement workers to cover for striking workers.

I heard about that but this is an environmental issue. Best for the Government to do what is necessary and test the legal case in court.

If these were nuclear workers striking and nuclear waste was piling on the streets, nobody would accept the Government to do nothing.

I believe they have bought in other people to deal with the fly-tipping but why would the Government test it in case when the law is already very clear?

This won't end any time soon as the Union does not want to negotiate and I don't think the council will be able to concede.

It is a tricky one. I meant that the Government could find agency workers to resolve the bin problem. There are many things that are clear in law but tested by the Government.

Bringing in agency workers to cover striking employees is illegal.. it's very clearly written in law.

I understand that. It is not the first time the Government has broken the law or bent it to fit their objectives.

If you tell the regular workers there no money for them then then splurge on temp/agency staff it somewhat shoots their argument in the feet and the union will dig in further.

It does not. If they are expecting (for example) an overall increase of £10m for wages and pensions every year, that would be different to a £1m emergency workforce to clear the mess. Personally, i think this should not be tolerated.

My view is that the Government should reasonably negotiate in good faith but the bins must be collected. There are way more health-related problems esp for vulnerable people.
