When should we apply for a DBS?

I accepted a PGCE offer back in January and haven't heard anything about DBS checks yet. I'm just double checking that this isn't something we can do ourselves and we have to wait until the university reaches out, right?

Hi @Eodi

From my experience, it can take a while to receive the email from the university regarding the DBS check. They may be waiting until the end of May to start sending those emails, as they may still be going through the process of accepting students on your course. I had received my first email for the DBS check mid-July only, and started the process in August, as it is a pretty straightforward and quick process.
Another reason why it is best to wait for the university to send you all of the information is that the university pays for the DBS check, instead of it being another cost for students, and then you'll also be sure to apply for the right one 🙂

Good luck!

Hi!

I just accepted an offer to study a PGCE and I’m so worried my DBS won’t be sorted in time for September, did you finally get yours sorted?

You can't apply for a DBS as an individual. Only schools and universities can apply on your behalf. Lack of a DBS doesn't stop you from going into a school. Schools have visitors all the time. It just means you can't work with children unsupervised so don't worry if things get delayed. Also, you won't be in a school in September. You will probably spend the first few weeks learning a few key basics and settling in which gives plenty of time for your DBS to come through. Don't panic and enjoy this relaxed time. The next 12 months of your life is going to be manic!

Thank you! I’ve been so worried about handing in my notice just in case something stops me starting in September, but I am defo overthinking!

Will enjoy the next month before the chaos ensues 😅

Echoing what hotpud said and with experience of Hallam...I started my placement in the last week of September (maybe the week before that), but the first 2 weeks were just shadowing teachers, following specific children (SEND/EAL etc) and lots of observations...all this you do with a member of staff, so not having a DBS is ok.

Also, I had to have one done for a new role at the start of this month, and it took 2 days to clear; I had my copy a week later.

Enjoy your summer, the fun begins in 5 weeks 🥰
