Mechatronics at Loughborough or Sheffield

Hi, I've gotten offers from both Uni of Loughborough and Uni of Sheffield for Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering, but I don't know which one to pick.
I LOVED the course at Loughborough but I'm not sure I couold imagine myself living there as its a campus uni and hard to get back to home from. I haven't been to the actual Lougborough town either but they mentioned at some points you many not even leave campus for a month bc youre that busy and idk if i like the idea of being stuck on campus with just students 24/7
Sheffield as a city is really nice, it was so green with so many shops and I could imagine myself living there, given its easy to get home and theres loads of activities there nearby which i like eg ice skating. The course wasn't bad but it didn't give me the same 'pizzazz' (pardon my language) as the loughboro course did. This may also be because i only visited sheffield on offer holder day whereas i went to the open day and interview day for loughboro

Any comments on the course and the city for students would be helpful!! I ust want to make sure I dont regret not going to one instead of the other

Course is THE most important thing. If that stood out for you at LB, that is probably going to be far more important to you than random green-spaces at Sheffield. The other big plus about LB is of course, sports facilities, and even if you are not 'into sport', having a fabulous pool for lazy afternoon swims etc is still a big plus.

Go to some Uni Open Days relevant to this course and ask what they want to see in your PS - they will be happy to explain this.

I don’t really have the chance to go since I’m not based in UK…

More than anything you need to show that you are ready for study at degree level - and that you have already starting read, study and 'find out' beyond just A levels. These are Moocs (short free online Uni level courses) that would give you relevant examples of topics etc to mention/discuss :
Building a Future with Robots - Online Course - FutureLearn (from Sheffield)
MedTech: AI and Medical Robots - Online Course - FutureLearn
Modern Robotics: Mechanics, Planning, and Control | Coursera
AI for Autonomous Vehicles and Robotics | Coursera

Reading suggestions from Hertfordshire - Robotics and Artificial Intelligence | Study | Uni of Herts and from LSE for Technology/AI Recommended reading on AI and technology | LSE Research

Hiya,

While it has been a while since I wrote my own personal statement, some advice given by the University of Sheffield is to use around a 75/25 split where 75% of the content of your personal statement is relevant to your course and the other 25% is used to discusses any extracurricular activities or other achievements.

Some topics that can be included about your desired course is:

Why are you applying for your chosen course?

What skills are required for your course and how have you developed any of these said skills?

What activities have you undertaken to demonstrate your interest in the subject?

Extra-curriculars to discuss can be:

Activities that you have undertaken that may not be directly relevant to the degree but you have gained transferrable skills from

Hope that helps a bit and let me know if you have any questions!
