Hey! Yep, absolutely- second year students can join societies, they're definitely not just for freshers (:
Societies are open to all students, It’s never too late to join, and you might even find it more enjoyable now that you’re a bit more settled into uni life! Most societies are really welcoming to new members at any stage, and lots of people join later on or even switch up what they’re involved in year to year.

Yes, you can and certainly should join if you are interested!
You can join as a fresh faced fresher or as a final year PhD, university societies are for the whole student body.

Hi there,

That’s a great question and yes, second-year students are absolutely welcome to join societies! They’re not just for freshers at all. In fact, lots of students choose to get involved later on when they feel more settled or want to try something new. Whether you want to make new friends, explore a hobby, or even take on a committee role, it’s never too late to join. Societies are always happy to welcome new members, no matter what year you're in! 😊

I hope this information helps you.

Hiya,

Yes, you absolutely can join student societies at any point during your time at university! You can join even at the end of your third year

Hey there,

My name is Siobhan and I’ma third-year student at the University of Central Lancashire.
You absolutely can and I would deffo recommend it! I didn’t join any societies til 2nd year, and I made some good friends through doing so 😊 The best thing is you don’t have to stay there if you don’t like it and there’s not a limit of how many you can join. Society info should be on your SU page so I would have a browse around there and see what interests you.

Hi 😀

Looks like your question has been answered, and you have had some great advice! The majority of universities enable students to join a society whenever it suits them during their degree. For example, at my university, I wasn't sure which societies to join in my first year, so I tried out a few free taster sessions. Then some of the societies let me pay for half a year using something called the Inspire fund (which undergraduate students get to spend on course materials, things for their accommodation, and societies).

I can highly recommend joining a society or two, depending on how much time you have, because they're a great way to meet other students with a common interest outside of your course and accommodation.

Most universities have a wide range of societies, so it is a good opportunity to try something new in a safe space. E.g., At my university we have things like football, snow sports, the Taylor Swift society, and the Racing society (who build race cars to race). At my uni if there isn't a society for something you're interested in already then if you get a minimum of four people on board you can pitch it to the SU who will help you set it up and even give you some funding, not only do you get to do something fun with you friends, but having a committee role like a Treasurer or Chair can look fab on your CV.

I hope you enjoy your studies!

HI folks,

As has been said above, societies at uni are for absolutely everybody regardless of your course or year of study.

If anything, I would say its better to join a society in second year than first year because by second year you will be used to the uni, will have got into the habit of managing your own time, plus the uni work will be a little more demanding and so it would benefit you even more to have something to take your mind off it. It will also help you stay connected to campus as most second years live off campus. I didn't join any societies until second year and I still found it a really valuable part of my uni life 🙂

Hope this helps and best of luck!

Hi @Anonymous #1

Absolutely societies are open to students from all years, not just freshers. Just to add, you can also take part in Freshers Week no matter what year you’re in, so feel free to head to the Freshers Fair and sign up for any taster sessions that catch your eye.

Hope that helps!

Hi there!

I am just reiterating what everyone has said really - of course you can join societies in second year! Lots of people do this and it is a great idea to do this so definitely think about this if this is something you would like to do.

You will find that there will be lots of people who do this as they spend first year figuring out Uni life and adjusting to something new, and then when they get to second year they want to try some new things and join some societies! So there will be lots of second year students in any societies that you join in second year.

I would have a look at the freshers fair in September and see if there are any that you like the sound of and then you can sign up for some trial sessions and see if you like any! And then think about joining from there.

I hope some of this helps,

Lucy -SHU student ambassador 🙂

Hey there!

Absolutely! You can join societies at any stage during your university degree - you are welcome in societies regardless of how long or short a time you've been at the university. By being further along than some students, you will have lots of advice and experience to pass onto the other society members. Over the summer, have a look at the societies your university has and during the first weekend of university at the start of the new academic year, you could attend the societies fair and sign up to all the clubs that appeal to you, that way you will be able to start with everyone right at the beginning of the year.

Clubs and societies are a super way of making new friends with students who have the same interests as you,
Have a great time!

Yes of course...why wouldn't they be able to?

You pay your student union dues as any other student!

Hey there,

Any university student can join societies, and I would definitely recommend everyone to! Personally, I wasn't extremely involved in societies during my first year even though I joined a few. However, during second year, as I felt more comfortable and settled into university life, I started becoming a more active member. I attended the clubs and societies fair at the start of the year and booked a few taster sessions. I really enjoyed societies during my second year because it was a great way to meet new people, make friends, try out new things, and get more involved in university life.

A lot of second and third year students also join society committees, since they’ve had a bit more time to explore what they enjoy and where they’d like to contribute. So if that's something you are interested in, I would definitely suggest reaching out to those societies directly to understand the process of becoming a committee member.

I hope this helps!

All the best,

Hi there,

Anyone in any year can join societies at university, so don't feel that just because you are a second year that you can't join a society. Societies are for everyone!

I hope this helps,
