:wavey: I’m in year 12 (i think thats the equivalent to s5 in England?) and study a levels in maths and biology.
Amazing Nat 5 results!
Id be so irritated if i had to continue English past gcse, hope you manage to get through the course without your hand falling off from essay writing or starting speaking in prose.

Hey! Your Nat 5 results are amazing well done! I’m currently about to sit my Nat 5s myself this year (very nervous haha but it’ll be fine 😅). I was actually going to ask how you find your subject combination for highers? I’ve picked the exact same as you for next year, although I’m crashing chemistry as apparently I like to make life difficult for myself lol. Do you find your timetable manageable/enjoyable? Im still hesitant as to whether I should swap history for another subject, as I was given the opportunity to do advanced higher art next year instead of higher but I think I’m leaning towards just not doing art next year and doing the AH in 6th year if I have the time as I don’t want too much pressure of you get me. I know in higher history it’s a lot of essay writing and was wondering how you found that aspect? I know you said English and history are subjects you like lesser than stem but do you find it’s nice to have a bit of a break and use your brain in a slightly different way I guess? Apologies, that’s a lot of questions I’ve just asked 🤣

hi! yea so personally history has definitely been the subject I've had to work hardest for, it has taken up loads of my time because as you mentioned the essays are a really big part of it and I struggled (struggle ig I still do) to properly tick all the boxes in the given time especially with the depth of analysis required for higher.

HOWEVER I do know loads of people in my class who are already really skilled at all the skills of analysis etc. so different people will be better at it and you might already be really good at it and not need to put an insane amount of work into becoming good at it

regardless of how much effort it requires I definitely recommend the course and do not regret picking it despite the hours of slaving away trying to get one mark in like half a page of writing (of course if you're good at summarising it won't take that much to get a mark maybe like a few lines more than nat 5) because it teaches invaluable skills of analysis and evaluation that I have been told will definitely help if you want to go to uni so yea, overall the workload can be pretty extreme if you're not already really good at analysing deeply, but 100% worth it in the end I'm told

apart from history I find the workload for the other subjects completely manageable but it's definitly worth keeping on top of things early and making sure you understand/remember everything you learn in class, it's mainly history that takes an annoying amount of time at least for me

sorry for the essay, hope I answered your question and good luck with your nat 5s! I'm sure it'll be fine as you say

hii first proper update..
so this weekend was not very productive mainly because it was good friday holy Saturday and Easter sunday so I spent most of it with my family, still managed to get a bit of work done though..

history: wrote a britain 5 (successes of liberal reforms) essay and gave it to chatgpt to mark with the marking scheme (I always have to tell it to mark harshly or it doesn't do it right) but it gave me 21/22 which I'm very excited about 😁
also wrote out everything I'm gonna say in Russia 5 (october revolution) essay in bullet points
english: 2018 ruae, didn't mark it though cos I don't know what gets marks and what doesn't
chemistry: 2012 paper 2
physics and maths: a bunch of old past papers

to do...
I was hoping to practice a havisham essay but of course the library was closed and I can't physically bring myself to write one of those essays in the house, hopefully I can write one tomoroe unless Easter Tuesday becomes a thing
history: try relearn my britain 6 (labour reforms) essay as I haven't seen it since the prelims 😬
write our bullet points of what I'm saying in Russia 2 (1905 revolution)essay

english: try memorise some ics quotes as again haven't really seen them since the prelims because I've been mostly focused on language questions
chemistry: properly locking in for chemistry now as I realised the exams a week on Thursday, so il do a full 2014 past paper then more focused past paper questions and revision of my mistakes

Well done on being so productive! I was wondering if you might be able to share some of your evaluation points for your history Liberal Successes essay, if you don't mind? I've been getting conflicting feedback from my teachers on whether the evaluation should just be like "upon evaluation, the liberal reforms did not meet the needs of the workers because ...." and be simple enough to follow the line of argument or if you need to compare two factors like "upon evaluation, the liberal reforms were more successful at meeting the needs of workers because .... than the sick because..." I'm a bit unsure of what the expectation is so I'd love to see how you approached it!

Hi! so what I've gathered from various teachers is basically that for the liberals essay and labour essay (if you're doing that one) and any other essay where an isolated factor isn't mentioned in the question, you're not actually ranking factors, you're basically just answering yes or no. your line of argument for any liberal or Labour essay is either they were or weren't overall successful in meeting the needs of the British people.

so for 2/4 evaluation, you need to say something like "in evaluation, the liberal reforms to help the young were limited in meeting their needs because..." and then say something new that's detailed enough and kinda links to the overall effectiveness/ineffectiveness of that reform.

if you're wanting to go for 4/4 evaluation, as far as I'm aware you'd just need to put in a counterargument before, like for example "in evaluation, although the reforms to help the young helped them in this way.... they were overall more limited because they failed to..." and then generally follow through with your line of argument throughout the essay that they were or weren't successful.

there's a really good 21/22 essay on understanding standards on britain 5 that I look at often might be worth a look

ofc it's totally different for essays where you rank the factors, much harder to get high marks for evaluation but hope this was helpful and good luck with history!!

thank youu I've followed along with your gyg also , I'm feeling pretty ok with it I think, I'd say chemistry is one of the easier subjects to understand and remember stuff for for me this year, but for some reason I find the tests and past papers where you actually have to think about them hard instead of rhyming off things you can remember beforehand strangely difficult so I'm really just trying to get as much practice of past papers as possible to get used to it. you're doing chemistry also this year right? how are you feeling for it?

Congrats on the amazing grades! Unrelated question, but I’m in S4 right now, and I was under the impression that we wouldn’t find out our percentages? Were yours just on the letter automatically or did you have to ask? Thx!

Reply 15

hi! yea they don't tell you on the letter at the start of august the just give you grades and no bands, but I'm pretty sure all schools receive the exact marks for all components of each exam, like they'll have your marks for each assignment and exam. our school let us go round each class to ask for our component marks, so from there we could calculate the percentage and band, but I know other schools might do it differently. good luck with your nat 5s!

hi again!
so yesterday was not as productive as I had hoped, mainly because most of my plans were ruined by the library being shut so I was kinda just thrown off for the rest of the day :frown: I did manage to write a britain 6 (labour reforms) essay that chat gpt marked and gave me 17/22 though which was ok ig, I did like half a chemistry paper 2 from 2013 or smth.

today will be different though! the library is open and I am happy. unfortunately though I was foiled once again because my ipad was out of charge and I forgot the charger, so the havisham essay will be harder to write since I usually type for English (both my history and English teachers said my handwriting is too illegible to be sent to sqa :frown: ) but il try to write it anyways

other things for 22.4.25...
- finish havisham essay
- write out all ics quotes I need to remember (50 so far 🥲)
- review chatgpts improvements for my britain 6 essay (I had a look and it was pretty brutal chatgpt did not hold back)
- write some notes and evaluation for my weakest factors in my weakest histroy essay Russia 2 (1905 revolution)
- hopefully the rest of that chemistry past paper

hopefully that's enough stuff to do for today🥲😪
