Subject: Urgent Request: Cancel GCSEs and Use Mock Grades
HIS EMAIL IS HERE - Email Address: [email protected].

Dear Sir Keir Starmer,

I am a gcse student, and I am writing to you as a GCSE student who is struggling with the immense pressure placed on us by the current exam system. I want to ask you to take urgent action and cancel the GCSE exams in 2025, and instead, use mock grades or other assessments that reflect our true abilities.

For months, students like me have been pushed to the brink, forced to revise non-stop, isolated from our families and friends, and constantly battling stress and anxiety. I have autism, and despite achieving Grade 8s and 9s in my mock exams, I feel like I am being crushed by an exam system that values pressure over mental health. It has become impossible to focus on learning, as every day feels like a fight to survive.

When I break down from the stress, my family laughs at my tears and I do not feel human I feel like a machine. This system has taken away my joy, my freedom, and my well-being. It is pushing me and countless others to the edge

Please, it’s clear that this traditional exam system is doing more harm than good. Instead of exams that put us at risk of burnout, I ask you to push for the cancellation of GCSEs and use mock grades as an alternative for assessing students. Mocks reflect our actual work and performance over time and would give us the chance to demonstrate our knowledge without the added pressure of high-stakes exams. Even the MP who created them wants to scrap them and it is all on the news.

This isn't just about me. Thousands of students are experiencing burnout, anxiety, and emotional breakdowns due to the intense pressure of the current system. We need a change one that values our mental health and well-being just as much as our academic success.

Please help us. Cancel the exams, and allow mock grades to be used as the basis for our final assessments.

Thank you for your time and attention to this urgent issue.

Sincerely,

A GCSE student who just wants to feel human again

I think that regular (not international) GCSEs in England suck (I could go into a whole rant about what sucks about the system and what could be improved) but they shouldn't be cancelled. CAGs suck even more (especially with the lack of standardised mocks and school grade boundaries).

Even during COVID, I was against their cancellation and believe that Y11&13 (and Y12 in the case of Scotland, NI and Wales) students should have been made to sit the exams whilst other year groups remained at home with social distancing and mask wearing in place.

I strongly support a phase out and long term reform of GCSEs especially given as you say, the founder itself wants them cancelled and the legal school-leaving age in England is now 18 instead of 16. Cancelling them this year with no long-term reform or phase out in place? No way.

No because I'm against GCSE exams being cancelled. How would one be able to contact Starmer?

The solution in my opinion is a phased cancellation with long-term reform and with the way things work in England, NI and Wales (where there's not that breath of subjects in Sixth Form) cancelling GCSEs wouldn't make sense. Especially for England as you often only do A-level exams in a crammed setting at the end of Y13 for most subjects. So for English students, their first proper secondary school exams would be in Y13, at the very end of sixth form, which is essentially what happened for the vast majority of the 2022 and 2023 England A-level Cohort.

I meant how would you be able to write to him (what would be his email/contact details, what method would you have to go through post vs online/website etc).

I'm genuinely sorry you're feeling like this but this letter wouldn't do a thing and most wouldn't be willing to copy/send it. I don't say this to be disrespectful or dismiss how you're feeling, but this letter boils down to "I suffer from autism and I'm having trouble at home, you must dismantle the nations exam system at once and only use mocks for everyone" It's just never going to be taken seriously I'm afraid. The prime minister almost certainly won't be reading it or replying, his team wouldn't pass it onto him and would just give you a kinda stock reply if any 😐️

Okay so mocks will become the GCSE’s then

I felt GCSEs were stressful when I completed them.

In hindsight, they were an absolute doddle.

If you are getting high grades in your mocks, you will most likely replicate that in the actual exams.
