Rowing atOxbridge

What is the college rowing standard like? What are the ergs people have? How does the lightweight programme at uni level work and what are the rough erg standards for that? What kind of ergs do uni level openweights have? Any info would be helpful. Thanks!
College rowing ranges from complete beginner to experienced rower. You'd be best served to ask about the specific college(s) that you're interested in.

Apparently at Oxford Oriel is pretty strong and Magdalene is a bit weaker atm. Any information on either of those for the sake of comparison?

College rowing is decent and can be good from beginners to top athletes. If you are a top athlete, i would suggest that you try for the University-level rowing.

Consider colleges like Queen’s.

I wouldn't judge based on current performance as a lot of it would be based on how good the current cohort is and this can change year on year as people matriculate and graduate.

men's captain at a Cambridge college here:
most rowers in Cambridge (and I assume Oxford) learnt to row with their college but it is still very common for people to come in who have rowed at school or for a club before uni. For a competitive college first 8 in lents (torpids is oxford equivalent) the erg average is around 6:45 for men and around 7:45 for women and for mays around 6:30 for men and 7:30 for women or sub 6 if you are Peterhouse M1 (aka the blue boat) but I can't stress how important it is to be good on the water and also a nice person to row with. For lightweight uni rowers ergs can vary hugely from around below 17 minutes to around 17:45 for 5k. I'm not sure about women. Open weights are also very varied the blue boat will be all around or under 16 mins but spares would be able have around 17 minute 5ks if they are extremely techy.

This is my very rough recollection of the typical 2k erg times for the men’s VIIIs from my time rowing for one of the larger college boat clubs at Oxford (though not as insanely competitive as, for instance, Oriel, which as you said is probably the strongest college boat club right now, at least of the undergraduate colleges):

M1: 7:00 or below
M2: 7:00-7:30
M3: 7:30-8:00
M4/M5: 8:00 or above

As mentioned though there can be significant fluctuation in the size and quality of the pool of those wanting to row for any college in any given year, so these are only extremely rough ranges.

This is also good advice: a couple of boat clubs, like Oriel and possibly Christ Church (although they had a bad set of bumps campaigns this year), can probably be relied on to be consistently strong, but most will tend to experience quite frequent flux in strength due to cohort churn and quality of leadership (captains usually only serve for one year).

Did you row at school? I recall those who rowed at school or local clubs had better prep with decent 2k times. Some went straight to Uni trials rather than college.

I didn’t, no. I also recall those who had rowed at school being overrepresented in the top boats, though the one guy I remember from my college who ended up rowing for the uni hadn’t actually rowed before coming to Oxford.

That’s fair. What was your 2k PB in College? Mine was 6:45 in training but i could not repeat it.
