Finding your mojo

Hiya,

I'm a mature student that is currently doing the MBA at OBU. I started off doing really well and really enjoying it but after a very difficult few years, I've lost my mojo to the point of wanting to quit.

Has anyone else experienced the loss of their mojo (which they managed to get back) and if so, what worked for you?

Hi @M406712A,

Thank you for reaching out, and we’re really sorry to hear that you’re struggling at the moment.

It’s completely understandable to feel overwhelmed or lose motivation. Please know that you’re not alone in feeling this way.

Here are a few things that may help:

Connect with your course mates - Sometimes, talking with others on your course or in a similar situation can be really helpful. You might find they’ve had similar experiences and can offer advice or encouragement.

Break larger tasks into smaller chunks - Setting achievable goals can make everything feel more manageable and help rebuild your motivation.

Reach out for wellbeing support - Our Student Support Services are here to provide both academic and personal support. Sometimes just having someone to talk to can make a big difference.

If you feel that taking some time away would help, and you're facing challenges due to illness or personal circumstances, you may want to consider applying for Approved Temporary Withdrawal from your course. More information on this is available on our website

We hope that this helps 😊. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.

Best wishes,

Hiya Clare,

Thanks for responding to my post and for the suggestions given.

To be fair to OBU, the support I have received has been absolutely fantastic. I have already taken an Approved Temporary Withdrawal and honestly, I have reached a point where I just want to get it done now which is a shame 'cause I know that I'm not as engaged as I first was and leaves me not enjoying learning as much anymore.

Anyhoo, thanks again for your time and suggestions.

Have a nice weekend.

Best wishes

Hi @M406712A

Yes, I’ve definitely been through something similar. I did my undergraduate degree in business and then switched disciplines into the social sciences. The way of thinking was different, my peers often seemed more confident or experienced, and I found myself needing to unlearn and relearn a lot just to bridge those ways of thinking.

What helped me get through my MA was taking time to reflect on how far I’ve come moving to a new city, stepping into a new field, and doing things that would have made my undergraduate self proud. I also made space for life outside of university by joining some general interest groups and making new friends, which really helped me recharge and not feel so consumed by the academic pressure.

Lately, working towards PhD scholarship applications has also helped me regain focus. Having a goal to aim for, beyond just completing the course, gave me something to look forward to and helped bring that spark back.

So yes take a moment to think about where you were a year ago. You've probably come a lot further than you realise, both personally and professionally. Future planning, along with reconnecting with life beyond the degree, really helped me get my mojo back.

Wishing you the very best as you continue your MBA 🙂

Hiya Megan,

Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts, it is appreciated.

I think you're right in that taking time to reflect on how far I've come coupled with the fact that the end is in sight can really help.

All the best with your future endeavours!
