Spain year abroad

Hello!
I am a second year psychology student planning on a year abroad next year! I've got a place at the University of Valencia but don't feel like I know much about the process at the moment. Just wondering if anyone has studied in Valencia, or just Spain in general and can give any advice or tell me what it was like!
Thanks!

Hi there,

Unfortunately I don't have personal experience studying abroad in Valencia (or Spain in general), but hopefully I can help.

I studied abroad in the US last year, and I really enjoyed it. It's such a great thing to do! However, I totally understand the worry of applying and trying to find out what it could really be like, and it makes it so much harder that you can't visit it beforehand.

If you're looking for advice on the application process, contact your university's study abroad team. Only they will know the answers, as the process can be different for each university, so be sure to get it right!

If you're looking for what it might be like to study there, I quite literally searched everywhere I could in my experience. Try any and every social media you can find, as the university likely posts stuff, but students usually do too. I think this is a neat way to get some insight into what student life is like. Blog posts can also be a great way to find out what it is like, and I find that students who study abroad usually like to write about their experiences. If you can't find Valencia, maybe there is somewhere nearby/similar that has a post written about it? General research was also helpful for me, as I found I could learn a little more about the area itself.

It can be difficult, but study abroad is so worth it. I feel like part of the experience is not really knowing exactly what to expect, which when you think about it, is actually super exciting!

I hope this helps, and I hope you have the best time! 🙂

Hello Emily67c,

I studied in Spain for one semester last year and found the experience to be quite different to what I’m used to the UK.

Contact hours: I had more contact hours for my subject (languages) in Spain compared to England. I had around 20 hours of contact hours in Spain and I did more modules. My lectures were typically any time from 08:30-18:00 so similar to the UK.

Modules: I found that I had more flexibility when it came to module selection and could pick modules from different levels/years despite being in 3rd year. You might also find yourself doing more modules than what you may be typically be used to (I did 5 modules but they still added up to 60 credits/30 ETCS).

I also found that I had more continuous assessment and class activities counted towards my grade. The grading system in Spain is also different.

Of course this is just my experience and things will probably differ for you as I don’t study psychology and I studied in a different Spanish city.

I would echo what Chester has said and get in touch with your university’s study abroad team. Every university is different as they say so what I’ve stated here might not apply to the university of Valencia.

Do you have any more questions and is there any specific areas where you want advice?

Best Wishes,
Imane

Hi lovely, so glad i read this message. I studied in Valencia in a language school during the summer before uni and loved it. I go on my year abroad later this year as well and because I do 3 languages I am splitting between 3 countries, and I am going to be living in Valencia from April 2026. Would love to get in touch if you'd like.
