Work experience

Hi I’m in S5 looking to get into banking or finance, however I’m not sure. I was thinking about my personal statement and realised it’ll be really thin so I was wondering if there is any work experience for the summer going about? Preferably relating to what I want to do. Thanks

You could try some online experiences on Springpod or the forage

Hi Anom,

It's great to see your trying to improve your personal statement!

When it comes to work experiences, a great place to look is online. Many large companies run online work experience workshops you can join in on. Check out the UCAS list of virtual work experiences.

I also recommend emailing local business that are related to your subject area and ask if you can do some work experience, even if its for a day it's still better than none! I did this and I had to email over 50 places before I got a placement for a 2 week work experience, so don't be afraid of rejection.

If you can't seem to get any work experience in your subject area, I still recommend getting a part-time job as you will build transferable skills that you could use within your application, even if the role does not directly correlate with the subject.

Aside from work experience, maybe try grow your knowledge by doing an online course. If you research into MOOCs for banking and finance you may find some great options but make sure they are from good sources.

I hope this helps, please feel free to ask me any questions,
-Sophia (University of Central Lancashire)

Great to see you're improving your personal statement! Consider checking out virtual work experiences and email local businesses for opportunities. Also, part-time jobs and online courses can boost transferable skills and knowledge for your application.
Good luck

Don’t overlook smaller local firms, even a week helping at an accountant’s office or doing admin at a local business shows initiative and interest in finance. Emailing or calling a few can go a long way. And if you can’t find anything formal, try a short online course
