Feeling very down

Hi everyone, I am on a gap year and I have recieved all rejections for medicine. I am still waiting on kings emdp I did my interview 19th Feb but they haven’t gotten back to me and it’s nearly the ucas deadline and loads of people have gotten offers a week after their interview so I’m really scared they are going to just reject me. Idk what to do or how to feel. I’m also resitting my alevels all 3 of them bio chem and maths but I haven’t started I don’t have any motivation everything feels so bad right now

Gap year is always very difficult and tough.

Easier said than done, concentrate all your efforts and thoughts at the exam. Strive for the highest possible grades. No matter what it is going to be. There will be a way ahead, waiting for you.

If you get the offer, go for that. Or medicine might probably not suit you. Think of other medical or healthcare options, pharmacy, physiotherapy or nursing. There are still vacancies. For medical and healthcare related subjects, uni rankings and prestige play no part (indeed same for all subjects, but particularly true here) because the whole world is lacking such personnel.

Again and most important, focus at your exam. Good Luck.

I wrote a thread specifically about this:

Concentrate on your exams for now but first you should take 2 weeks to be angry or feel dejected or whatever. After that, you have a challenge on your hands- you need to go away and decide what you are going to do in the next 12 months to pursue personal development and how you might make yourself a better applicant and ultimately a better doctor by the end of the entire process.

When you have some kind of plan, please come back here and post your thoughts.

Medicine is not the be all and end all. There are loads of careers, lots of opportunities and not all doctors live the dream life.

So explore all options, you and your family are health, safe and well. Rest is simply a journey

That is very true, there are many things one can do in life and still feel fulfilled and make a living.

HOWEVER

If someone told me they thought about medicine and being a doctor, or applied to veterinary medicine or dentistry -careers that take years of training and development- but failed once at some stage and then gave it all up, I think it would be tempting to conclude they didn't really have their heart set on it in reality. None of these are simple paths to tread unless you are supremely naturally gifted at them so it's natural that people will be tripped by the odd hurdle along the way.

Don't be put off. Your path in reality is no different to anyone else's. A year working in healthcare, for example, will teach you a lot about medicine that first year cannot.

Absolutely not. Do your exams again and reapply next time. Do you want to be a dentist?

HI I am also in a gap year and the worst thing about me is i got an offer from my dream school but can't go because I retook (mine was already on Jan because my exam board is Internationa) my exam and didnt get the grade. SO what i did was I declined all the offer and reapplied through UCAS extra. If you have to go to UK university this year then UCAS extra could be the choice. However, I am not sure if there is vacanies in medicine but try applying for other (non-medicine) course that could aglin with your personal statment. Or ask the uni if you can write extra PS and send it to them to be consdiered.

i know this might not help but I understand how you feel and everything will work out in some way just try your best. Use your time and energy with your exam because the time will not come back after you take the test. Its too early to use your time stressing and being sad about smth else. You can do this! It not too late right now! you still have some choice

If you apply and study abroad it will surely be more expensive and there is no guarantee you will be offered an NHS dental contract at the completion of it, at least that is how I understand it. To be fair, that might not be a deal breaker if you would rather practice abroad anyway.

Take a gap year and reapply. Don't be put off by a bump in the road.

if you apply to countries approved by the GDC then it is a lot easier. but i do agree with you in terms of the fees, you need to plan your finances before going (fees are also higher for non eu students but since im eu europe doesnt seem like a bad option). i cant be asked to take another gap, i feel so left out and behind. if my application to europe doesnt work out either then obviously i'll be forced to take another gap

Hello,

Have you considered applying for a Medicine with Foundation Year? This is an additional year which will enable you to progress onto the first year of the MBChB course after its completion. Find out more here: Medicine with Foundation Year at University of Leicester

Hope that helps and good luck on your journey 😊
