Gateway to medicine Aberdeen anyone completed the course here?

Hi just looking to hear from any current or former G2M students @ Aberdeen
Any tips/suggestions/things good to know... please share your thoughts/experiences
What was the accommodation choice you made? Are there halls near the college or did you stay nearer the university or hospital? Anyone commute from Dundee/Angus?
What is a typical daily timetable like?
Did you get much work opportunities via the bank? do I need to look for another job on top? Will I have time to do another job?
Did you do all the fresher stuff with the college and/or university, or even wider RGU etc or is that more geared at 1st year students of the university. Do we get to do freshers twice?? Would we want to!?
Did you join any societies at college and/or university?
Do you socialise with existing medics?

yeah not sure what to do for best I don't know if we are eligible for SAAS funding to pay for halls or what timetable looks like or anything so was hoping someone who had done the course could share their experiences

I stayed near the uni, easier for lectures. Timetable's mixed, some long days. Bank shifts are a hit or miss, so backup job helps.

Saas will fund G2M students for 5 years +2 (so 7). 1 year is for G2M, 5, for medicine and 1 for either a repeat or intercalated degree whilst during medicine. You would be able to apply for a loan too for each of these years, and of course SAAS bursaries you are entitled too. Part of the G2M course is that all G2M students get a £2000 bursary (split over 2 terms) that we give you to assist with your studies too.

Just to answer some of your questions here, a typical day will see you in college most days during the first term, as we well as some extra courses that are held in the Foresterhill Campus to help starting getting you prepared for medicine.

With regards to the HSCW bank, it does take a wee bit of time to get that up and running (due to training requirements etc), so its entirely up to you whether you wanted another job. You might want to do something non-healthcare related to meet other people!

Term for G2M starts at the end of August, so you will be able to take advantage of both Nescol and University of Aberdeen welcome weeks. I dont think RGU would be an option, but I dont know!! You'll be invited to come to the medicine society fair as well as the whole uni one &college, so you an join as many (or few) as you want!

And yes absolutely, you will be given a medic buddy for starts, you will have classes on campus, and if you join any of the medicine societies you'll be surrounded! You'll also meet them at Hillhead and in the hospital if you join the bank.

Hope that helps

Just wondering how does accommodation work for G2M students as I heard from current G2M students that some people are entitled to free accommodation for a year? Not entirely sure if this is accurate but if so What is the criteria to be eligible for this?

Heard this last week too and also 1st year apparently some people get free accommodation which would be amazing and make it more viable to go there

Hi all, apologies for the delay in replying! So we do guarantee a place in accommodation for incoming students but I'm not certain if the accommodation is paid for also. I would recommend contacting [email protected] where our Gateway2Medicine team will be happy to advise further on what's available.

I'm not exactly sure what bursary you're referring to here. Is this a SAAS bursary or one that we offer? If you have any more details and links that would be helpful, and if it is one that SAAS offers then they will be able to advise further.

Sorry I wasn't more specific! On the G2M course information section on the website, it says students will be supported with up to a £2000 bursary. 🙂
