whats the route to apply for a PhD in chemistry?

Hi,

I am currently doing a PhD in Physics and I can speak about my own experience. Most of my colleagues completed an integrated masters or separate research masters prior to their PhD. Whilst this is not a need, it is highly recommended as a way to experience research culture - a masters gives you the freedom to run your own experiments/dedicate yourself to some intense research. Oftentimes a masters project gives you experience that you can talk about in PhD interviews that a final year bachelors project might lack.

I know of a few people who went straight into a PhD post bachelors, however they had also done a year in industry which again gave them more experience.

Once you are sure you want to do a PhD you need to find a research topic. You can either contact supervisors directly and express interest or you can use websites like findaPhD to look up projects that are being advertised. Then it becomes like a job interview: a formal interview is often required and you will be asked to talk about any research experience you have. You can also email any potential supervisors and ask to meet/chat informally about the project, the university and the research focus of the group.

If you have any questions let me know!
Thanks,
Hannah - University of Bath Representative
