Durham Colleges - Postgraduate

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could help me choose a college at Durham? I’m starting the MSc in Law and Finance this September. I’m 23 (home student) - pretty social, enjoy going out and having a drink, and I’d like to meet similar people around my age.

I’m applying to live in college and would ideally like somewhere with a decent bar, a good gym (if possible), and nice accommodation - preferably ensuite. Location matters too, since my classes will be in both the Law School and The Waterside Building. I’m leaning towards Castle or St Cuthbert’s, but honestly, I’ve got no idea what the vibe is like.

Thanks for any help!

Hiya,

Castle and St Cuthbert's are both great colleges (St Cuthbert's is my college) and both have great bars and a pretty good social scene. Castle is a catered college and St Cuthbert's offers self catered and catered options so if you prefer a self catered option then I would opt for Cuths. Also, Cuths only offers ensuite rooms at the self catered accommodation in parsons field so you won't be located on the bailey if that was what you were looking for. Castle offers shared rooms and single rooms mainly, they do have ensuite rooms at Kepier court but it is quite limited. I haven't had a chance to go to cuths gym but I heard its decent (although quite small); Castle has a gym in moatside from what I know and you can find a tour on the castle JCR website. My advice is to have a look at Castle and St Cuthbert's JCR websites as they have room tours and tours of the other facilities and a list of all the sports and societies, that will probably help you with your ranking 🙂

Hope this helps!

Hey, I'm going to Durham in September for LLM. I put JoBo as my 1st, South as my 2nd and Cuths as my 3rd! I did consider the postgrad only college but feel as though mixing with postgrads and undergrads will be great!
