Packing for university

I leave home in September for Liverpool John Moore University and need to pack what I feel is necessary (clothes, books, health essentials etc). When should I start packing? My friend says to start once we finish college completely (June) but that sounds too early. Can anyone give me a bit of packing advice? Thankyou 😊
Hi @Mills4Art,

Most people start packing about a week or two before moving, since you’ll still be using most of your things over the summer. So, no need to rush in June!

Start by setting aside items you won’t need on a daily basis, and leave the essentials until closer to moving day. When you do begin packing, try using sturdy boxes or bags (like IKEA ones), and group your items by category—kitchen items together, bathroom essentials together, etc. Be sure to wrap any breakables carefully if you have them!

Also, remember: not everything needs to come with you. Things like kettles or toasters can probably wait until you’re settled in, especially since your flatmates might have the same idea. It’ll help save space and avoid bringing too many duplicates.

Good luck getting ready for LJMU! 🙂

Just remember not to take everything you own. Take the basics.
Its a tiny study-bedroom with limited storage, and you are only going to be there until next June.
You will come home at various points so you can swap clothes etc for what you then need.
Also - University towns do have shops. You don't need to take tons of extra stuff 'just in case'.

Okay thankyou

And ...... charity shops are the best places to pick up cheap crockery, glasses etc, there is no need to buy 'new' when its all going to get chipped and dented etc in a communal kitchen.

Hi @Mills4Art ,

Firstly congratulations on your offer to study at Liverpool John Moore! I am sure you will have a great few years 🙂

In terms of when to start packing, I would say that a couple of weeks before you go is a good idea, or even just a week before if you have a packing list already as you will know what you are taking, you just need to pack it. I would also say that when it comes to buying things, you probably don't want to start doing this too early (unless you see something on sale or you really want it) as you will only have to store it which can be quite tricky for people sometimes.

Here is a list of some of the best things I brought for each room:

Bedroom:

Storage boxes for under your bed as storage can be limited (check if you have room first though).

Extension leads in case your plug sockets aren't where you would want them to be.

Hangers

Two duvets so there is always one for when you are washing one

A washing airer/clothes horse

Homely items such as photos, blankets, pillows etc.

Bathroom:

A small bin

Bathmat

Two towels, again for when one is being washed

A shower caddy to keep all items in

Kitchen:

A couple of tea towels

Utensils that you actually use at home!

Oven gloves

Utensils, plates etc that are recognisable - e.g. a colour, or with a pattern so you can tell they are yours.

Where to buy:

Charity shops

Dunelm - they have good sales

Ikea

Supermarkets

I hope some of this helps!

Hi @Mills4Art

If you start earlier sometimes you can find things for cheaper.

I will leave a link to a previous post I have done that has some advice on The best places to shop for moving to uni (cheaply)

I hope this is useful and hope you have a great time at uni!

Hi @Mills4Art
There is no need to rush the packing process. I would recommend starting to buy kitchenware and bedding ect. over the summer, just so its not a rush or one big expenditure just before university starts.
I would recommend packing all of your items for one area in a box/bag eg. bedding, kitchenware, stationary, tech, so it is easier to unpack when you get to university.
Also remember that you don't have to take everything to begin with, you can collect things along the way when you visit home and know more about what you will use at university.
Finally, if when you move into your university halls, you find there's not much storage, would recommend buying a plastic chest of draws from shops like ikea or B&M as these are useful extra storage.
Hope this helps!
