Open university for PGCE

Feasibly, at the moment I can only apply for a PGCE through open university. My goal after is to do two years of teaching and then teach internationally. Is the Open University internationally accepted or is it looked down on for not being a traditional university? I'm just wondering whether I should save and apply for the PGCE next year instead and do it in a traditional university.

Good afternoon,

When doing a PGCE for teaching, you want to ensure you can gain Qualified teacher status. Otherwise, you will not be able to be a qualified teacher.

I think the Open University allows you to achieve QTS, but I suggest double-checking. Also, gaining in-person experience will be essential when looking for jobs, as schools will want to see you have had the in-person experience.

I suggest you look at the teacher training programme on Teach First; they are a large government company which offers a two-year paid course. The two-year course leads to a QTS, and you get paid during training.

Additionally, the University of Reading offers a one-year PGCE, which leads to QTS, and is a more traditional route into teaching.

If you have any questions, please let us know.

All the best,
