nightlife in sheffield vs nottingham?

I'm in year 13 rn and am currently picking between the university of sheffield and the university of nottingham for next year, and the course each uni offers is like 95% the same in terms of content, uni rep, outcomes etc, so it basically comes down to which city is better (though with the one caveat that if i get A*AA sheff will give me a big chunk of money if i firm them)

I do enjoy drinking and i like a good night out - with the caveat that I'm not HUGELY into clubbing and prefer bars (and pubs), but I'll still go clubbing if all my friends want to go - so i was wondering which will likely be better for this (or if both are good) in terms of stuff like variety, liveliness, cost of drinks etc

Sheffield all the way! There are lots of pubs in Sheffield and the university has a large number of Northerners who know how to party! Drinks are cheap as are most things in the North.

My daughter knows several people who went to Sheffield and they all loved the social scene. The university is very close to the town centre with clubs, pubs and wine bars.

Hi @Debs25 ,

Congratulations on your University offers!

I know you have applied to the Uni of Sheffield, but I can still give you some good insight into what the nightlife is like in general in Sheffield.

I have had a great experience here so far over the last few years and think that there is a great social scene here! I like going out on West street which is a street full of bars and clubs and is always busy with students! There are lots of different bars in one place which is really nice so you have a good choice!

There are also loads of other great bars across the city which people tend to go to. There is definitely a good mix of bars and pubs so there is something for everyone here.

There are also great pubs near the student areas such as Broomhill and Crookes, which are great for meeting lots of other people and going for a drink on a sunny day!

I know that UoS has a great student night too of their own which their students love and is a great night out so maybe have a little look into this too.

I know that Nottingham is a good night out too so I am sure you will have a great time wherever you choose.

I hope some of this helps,

Lucy -SHU student ambassador 🙂

Both are great student cities. Nottingham has an amazing campus which is a 10-15 minute bus ride out of city. The uni provides regular buses to and from the city. Sheffield is not a campus uni; its buildings run along the A57. Its west of the main city - again a 10 minute bus ride out.

Both cities have a buzzing night life and student social life so you cannot go wrong whichever one you pick. If you are in line to get a whopping big grant from Sheffield then go there.

Go to Nottingham. Actual grades achieved by entrants are considerably higher for this subject at Nottingham (80% - joint 9th in the UK) than Sheffield (66% - 17th in the UK) according to The Complete University Guide. I would never choose solely on entry standards but edurank say Nottingham is 7th best in the UK for this subject whereas Sheffield is 10th, and Nottingham is overall a more picturesque city and the main campus is grandly unique looking in its white stone (makes a change from 'red' brick) in its own parkland. Nottingham is said to have many independent shops. The fact that Sheffield have to throw money at people to get them to go shows that it is not the best city and, even if it was, Nottingham's campus cannot be surpassed imo. You've got your whole life to make money but only 3+ years to enjoy the best university environment and city that you can.

I appreciate the response but I've asked some engineers and broadly, they say that all accredited courses will hold the same weight bar the very top unis, and sheffield and nottingham are already quite comparable even without taking that into account. And having been to and liking both cities, I think there's not much in it either way tbf, both are also quite good for student satisfaction

Tbh the thing that swayed me most was that despite Nottingham's campus being gorgeous, I just don't like campus unis in general. Couldn't say why, but they give me a weird vibe

Nottingham will be a lot better of a campus university than most as most are from the 1960s. Sheffield appears to have a lovely building itself so if you prefer that vibe always choose the vibe when places are similar academically

Which university do employers prefer? If for example employers prefer Nottingham it will make it harder to get a job if you went to Sheffield.

Hey @walp013!

Congratulations on your offers! In terms of night life/socials at University of Sheffield, the city offers so much in terms of pubs, bars and clubbing... there is something for everyone. One of the main locations people like to go to is the Students Union, with a student bar and club, and there's also the Leadmill and lots of other places around the student areas which people love, such as on West Street. You'll find lots of people are also up for a pub night as well, with so many around Broomhill and Crookes which is where a lot of the student housing is as well.

Having said this, I know lots of people here who don't like clubbing/nightlife and there's so much else Sheffield offers in terms of getting to know people, like societies offered by the university and going to the peaks!

Hope this helps, please drop a message if you have any other questions!
