Engineering - advice urgently needed

Hey, I’m possibly gonna start studying engineering this coming September at uni.

I’m a Scottish student, so I only applied to Scottish uni’s. In fifth year I only sat 4 highers and got AACD (C math, D physics, A in geo+english). This year, I’m sitting advanced higher physics, resitting higher math, and sitting higher environmental science, history, graphics, and business.

I’ve got a conditional from Heriot Watt and a conditional from Glasgow Caledonian.

I was rejected from Strathclyde and Glasgow - Strathclyde one said there wasn’t enough space and Glasgow said I got rejected because I never met fifth year requirements.

I don’t know if I want to commute to Edinburgh every day or if going to Heriot watt is worth it. In my position, I’m predicted to do better this year, is it better to wait and go to Strathclyde or Glasgow (I don’t want to leave my girlfriend behind so I’d be commuting to Edinburgh if I went to Heriot watt) or go to Heriot watt and just commute every day for four years.

I’m not too keen on Glasgow Caledonian because it’s not highly ranked for engineering.

There's no guarantee you'll get other offers next year. I would go to Heriot Watt but commute weekly. You'll have lots of lectures every week and a daily commute [unless less than 30 mins] will be too much. Lots of students cope witha LDR for a time ...

I wouldn’t be pulling out until after results, I would plan to continue then if in the summer you have stronger grades that would make a very competitive application to Strathclyde or Glasgow and consider re-applying at this point. If things dont go as planned with improved grades and you reject everything now, you don’t want to be left with no options…

I don’t know how significant the commute is but if its more than 45 minutes one way, I strongly recommend moving to university. You can always come home very regularly perhaps every weekend if you really want to, but there are lots of ways to manage these circumstances

Either propose and then move together as a couple, or accept that it's not going to last through your degree and don't make decisions about your long term future on the basis of your school girlfriend you aren't intending to marry anyway.

A one hour commute one way is ill advised especially as the longer the journey the more friction points and delays you will likely face, so a one hour commute is probably 90mins planning and managing. Which is 3 hours total. This will have huge effects on your social life, mental health, and academic performance at university.

I strongly recommend finding alternative ways to manage the relationship rather than this commuting plan which will lead to no social life, no participation in the opportunities at university outside of academics, and likely have challenging consequences on academics which in turn impacts burn out and ability to pursue jobs/internships…
