Drop A-Level Further Maths?

Should I drop Further Maths after getting my AS-Level?

I’m a year 12 student currently studying Maths, Further Maths, Physics & Computer Science.

I do enjoy all my subjects and am predicted all As but am finding it very challenging managing the workload, especially during exam seasons. I want to go into the field of Computer Science (either in a degree apprenticeship or just a straight job right out of A-Levels), and obviously my choices were for that. However I’ve come to realise that while I am able to understand advanced maths and solve problems, I genuinely do not want to go into something where I would need to learn more theorems or silly equations just for the sake of “doing maths”.

This would mean going into a field of technology that isn’t heavily maths-based, which is what I now hope to do. I have real AS exams in Further Maths this upcoming May, and was wondering whether it would be worth dropping it after this qualification rather than continuing to do the full A-Level. This would give me time to better prepare my coding skills and work on a personal project, which would probably be more useful for me in the future.

I also have good work experience in the field of technology/science, with my foot in the door at companies such as Microsoft, Barclays, the Met Office, etc., so I’m hoping that this would make up for me not having the full 4th A-Level.

My school does offer the option to do this and apparently it isn’t uncommon, and I do have until September to fully decide. If I could get any advice from Year 13s who take Further Maths or anyone in the field of Computer Science that would be greatly appreciated.

I say drop it to be honest unless your planning to head to cambridge or oxford it wont help you too much. OFC itll give you a bit of a head start if you go UNI but other than that it isn't very helpful except for a handful of subjects you plan to go onto in the future. Hope this helps (i was also planning to do further maths but didnt go through with it)

Thanks I really appreciate this. I believe I will drop it because I’m going mentally insane over it right now (a common symptom of further-maths-itis) and I realised, why am I putting myself through this? Do I need it? No. Will it affect me if I drop it? No. I’m glad I did the AS but its hell enough I am NOT doing it in Year 13. Goodbye Further Maths.

Id recommend against doing that and dropping physics instead if ur struggling managing the workload.

Obvs do whatever u truly want but my thought process is: FM is the MOST versatile a level, if u want a top 10 uni for CS id highly advise keeping it and dropping physics. Also, you say u want to go into "going into a field of technology that isn’t heavily maths-based" - if u do a degree at uni you will be doing FM level maths regardless.

For apprenticeships, FM wont make much of a difference, however defo do those personal projects and hone coding skills - if ur struggling for time then drop physics.

For reference, im yr 13, i do Maths chem Physics and did AS FM (dropped year 13 lol) Biggest regret ever, all my uni offers (Econ) are very high, if i had an A in a level FM then they normally drop it a grade. I also have multiple Banking DAs and for that side defo get started on personal prejects.

Whatever u you do im sure youll be sweet mate

Best of luck!

If you’re contemplating it, drop it. It gets significantly more difficult in Y13. There is also a lot of abstract stuff in CP2. Future you will be so grateful!

hey, id say im pretty much in the same shoes as you, excvept im in y13, im doing same a levels and wanted to do an apprenticeship,

i think one thing to bear in mind is that it does add to your uni application, apprenticeships are HARD to get into, so if uni is a backup then maybe consider keeping it but that is given you can get a good grade in it. unis are also brutal, unless ur aiming for imperial, oxbridge etc, theyd rather three stong grades. if doing fm with your a levels will negatively impact your grades, then priotisie your grades.

sometimes i regret taking difficult a levels in the first place, often apprenticeships have grade requirements but no a level requirements, if you're set on doing one then you can get into tech with any a levels at most places.

i appreciate what i said was a little all over the place, in conclusion, if you think you are good at it and can achieve good results in your a levels, id say go for it, if you really do not want to go uni and are confident you will be able to get an apprenticeship, then dropping it wont be too bad- it'll protect your sanity thats for sure, im on here trying to procrastinate revising fm lol

hope this helps )

If you are not keen on the workload and you don't love maths for maths's sake I'd say knuckle down for the AS and then drop it and make sure you get top grades in your other 3. There are definitely pros of doing it as outlined above, but for me the cons outweigh them because if you can do maths you can do maths, no need to prove it unless you're aiming for a top 5 uni. It's worth saying I don't know about compsci apprenticeships so it may well be that it is better to take it, but from what I know it sounds like dropping it mught be the play.

My school doesn’t let me drop Physics to continue Further Maths. I’m at a VERY small sixth form (maybe 100-120 over both Year 12 & 13) and only myself and 1 other student takes Further Maths (no Year 13s, 2 other classmates signed up and either decided against it or dropped it months ago), and because of this FM is taught externally online, so if we dropped another A-Level instead we technically wouldn’t be in full-time education. I understand that most technology degrees at uni would require a lot of maths, but even though I know I would be able to, I don’t think there’s any point in doing it if I just really don’t want to.

I understand this and know that uni is not my backup. I want to go into some sort of coding/technical development, and a degree at this point of market saturation is really just not worth it. If I’m able to get onto a degree apprenticeship then great but I’m absolutely not willing to spend most of my life in debt for something that doesn’t matter to me too much, so my backup is either finding a lower-level apprenticeship/straight job and working my way up, or using my qualifications to be able to work part time in other countries whilst travelling and seeing the world with my friends/girlfriend, as that is more important to me than anything else.

in that case you can drop it, most apprenticeships range between ccc-aab sort of thing. if ur doing well then go for it, otherwise feel free to drop it. if i have to say one thing though its start your nea early, saves you a ton of time in the future lol
