Psych @Uni of Bath

So I’ve accepted an unconditional offer from the University of Bath for Psychology with Work Placement and I was wondering if anyone who goes there can tell me what it’s like to be on this course and what the psych department at Bath is like as a whole? I’m not just talking about the course/modules but any wider internships and opportunities specifically offered for psych students there. I know Bath is really good in Psych which is why I chose it but I wanna investigate a little more because the website can be quite vague, thanks!

Hi there!

Great to hear you've accepted your offer from us! I also studied this course so I'll try and help a bit with your questions.

The psych department overall is really friendly, and the lecturers as well as being expert researchers in their field are excellent teachers, and most are extremely supportive in terms of supervision, answering your questions/arranging meetings, holding workshops and advertising their office hours. I also found the personal tutor/academic advisor system really helpful where you are allocated an academic to act as your personal tutor who you can go to for academic, general uni life and pastoral support with deadlines, extenuating circumstances, workload management etc.

Many of the academics will also be very willing to get you involved with helping with their research too. When I was in my second year I went down after a lecture and spoke to one of the professors whose work I was really interested in, and asked if he needed any help, and I ended up recruiting participants, coding data and running stats for him. This work even led me to deciding on a topic for my dissertation, and he even ended up as my supervisor, so its definitely worth taking the leap and asking!

The modules on the website are indeed a bit vague, but examples of some of the ones I took in the 4 years were: cognitive neuropsychology, clinical, health, behavioural economics, organisational, sport psychology, affective neuroscience, psychology of autism, language development psychology, educational psychology (my personal favourite!), social, developmental, and mind, brain and behaviour, so quite a range - whilst you may not have the exact ones its likely the themes will be very similar.

Lastly, I'd say that the level of support with finding placements is excellent. You get placement-themed workshops throughout second year focussing on things like CV writing, application and interview help as well as preparing you mentally for the change in your way of working on placement. When I did the course there was a long list of placements you could apply for, then you selected the ones you wanted to give a go and put in your application for them with support. The placements in psych aren't generally paid but there is wide range of what you can do from research to industry to clinical.

I really hope that helps a bit but if you have any more questions please post away! And best of luck with the rest of the year 🙂

Thank you so much for your swift reply! I’m just gonna list down my other questions here:

Is it true that you can only live in uni accommodation for first year?

When it comes to Bath insight/micro internships, have you come across roles that are psychology related?

Any volunteering opportunities that come along which would be useful experience when it comes to working in a mental health field?

Does Uni of Bath have any special links to the NHS that could benefit students in terms of placements/opportunities to get experience?

Any top psych graduate employers who’ve visited the uni to advertise anything for students?

I know those are pretty specific lol take your time to reply x

Hi again!

These are all great questions to ask at an offer holder event! I'll do my best to answer below...

1.

Generally people only live in accom on campus in first year - after that people either move into a house with friends, move back home and commute if you're local, or move into rented accom in the city. If you have specific extenuating circumstances such as a disability then you may be able to live on campus beyond first year.

2.

Bath Insights offered an internship in business and comms development in the department of psychology this year, as well as an internship in research within the faculty of humanities and social sciences, which both were psychology based. So keep an eye out for these in 2026!

3.

Bath Raise and Give society society run events for a variety of charities, many of which mental health focussed. It is open to anyone who wants to volunteer their time and skills, and is a lot of fun and a chance to meet new people also interested in charity work. You could also simply approach lecturers after classes and ask if they need any help with their research - they may be able to set you up with some participant recruitment, data analysis etc which would be great to talk about on a CV and for placement interviews.

4.

Previously we have had people go on placements to NHS facilities such as Great Ormond Street Hospital and some other NHS trusts around the country. We have connections with a number of employers and some are open only to Bath students. So if mental health is something you're interested in exploring further there will almost definitely be placements available in that field.

5.

Every year we have careers fairs where a variety of top employers come to visit. As far as psychology is concerned, whilst I am not aware of any psychology-specific employers making visits, there are a range of different careers you can go into with a psychology degree, and having a placement year is a great thing to talk about in your CV - it can even act as a foot in the door to future employment should you want to back to the same company after you graduate.

I'm sorry I couldn't give more detail but I hope this helps!

Thank you for your reply, that's enough detail for me 🙂 Obviously I'll have to wait until I actually start at Bath to get a full gage of everything but what you've said so far is very promising!
