Advice for opening uk bank accout

Hi everyone,

I’m an EU student trying to open a bank account in the UK. Recently, I applied with HSBC, but my application was declined with a message saying, “We’re sorry, we can’t offer you an account right now. Your application has been declined due to one or more of the internal policies.”

I came across a site that mentioned you may be refused a bank account if there’s a record of fraud or a poor credit rating. I suspect my previous Revolut account closure might be affecting my applications.

Does anyone have advice on how to handle this or suggestions for traditional banks that might be more flexible? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance

Max

What was the reason for the "previous Revolut account closure"? If it was due to fraud, or similar, then it's extremely likely that you'll be declined an account wherever you try to open one.
Have you spoken to your university international team for help?
Online account applications might not work if you aren’t a UK national.

So your Revolut account was closed, without explanation, and you have no idea why it was closed? How strange.

I've also just noticed that above you wrote, "I suspect my previous Revolut account closure might be affecting my applications." Applications, plural. Was this just a typo, or have you been refused a bank account elsewhere too?

Finally, I note that on this page, HSBC define their eligibility rules as follows:

"Before you can apply for an HSBC Bank Account, please confirm you meet the following criteria:

You’re not an existing HSBC customer
You’re aged 18 years or above
You currently live in the UK or one of the following countries

Eligible Countries
Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden"

Do you meet each of those eligibility rules, including being a resident of one of the eligible countries?

Well, if HSBC won't tell you why they declined to open an account for you, and if Revolut closed your account without explanation, and if you have no idea what policy you've breached at either institution, then you're a bit stuck.

Have you tried submitting a Data Subject Access Request (DSAR) with CIFAS? They might have some idea what the issue is. Details here.
