Do we know what 2024’s discourse question was on as in was it gender, change, accent and dialect etc? Also what are everyone’s predictions for the diversity/ change essay and the discourse topic

Can’t remember but we wrote a mock on it I’d be happy to send it over. I think it was about if ethnicity is the most important thing changing language. Or something to that effect

From what I can remember/have seen online. Q1. Evaluate the idea that a person’s language use is determined by their identity.
Q2. Evaluate the idea that language needs to be reformed to remove prejudice and bias.
Q3/4. Two articles on removing standard english in education.

Also does anyone have any predictions for this years questions? Have we seen anything about world englishes before that's not americanisms? Or occupational language maybe?

Sorry if these arent the best tips but i find it helpful to remind myself of these… you are marked on genre conventions so heading strap-line discourse markers (simple but effective, you cannot get denied of marks if you make it clear of the genre). Despite being super specific in all other questions with terminology with this you have to strip it all back. For example your audience wont know what an empty adjective is or what a prescriptivist view is so avoid this terminology and word it as if you are explaining for example “women use describing words which arent tangible such as ‘lovely’ make sure you also add some theorists, use them to back up ur opinion if easier for example according to Lakoff women use describing words such as ‘lovely’ and this creates a softer approach to their language” you dont need to go into depth but they need mentioning for Ao2 marks. (The examples i gave would be for a gender topic but obviously the theory u would include would be for whatever topic is in question 3). I also find it easier to start with an anecdote “i was sat in a cafe and heard male and female friends talking to eachother… they said… and this got me thinking is women’s language really that different…” it shows your experience its a convention and it sets the scene for what u will be talking about. I have lost my examples of high grade examples but the ones which achieved an A were consistently using these features.

Is world english a topic in itself? Was just looking at past papers and we've never studied it 😟

We did it as part of change topic. There wasn't loads on it, we looked at 2 case studies and some models of world English and reasons for English as a global language. Happy to send you my notes if you don't have any.

Perhaps try focusing on language diversity if change isn't really your thing focus on the parts you're more likely to answer rather than trying to study for both questions of Section A
