hey guys!
does anyone who does prose comp know how i should go about answering questions that are phrased like 'how does the writer convey _?' (not sure how else to explain them)

my impulse is to do language analysis but looking at mark schemes it never is
i think most mark schemes just give a list of content points but sometimes there are explanation points too (like 'give 3 points' but its a 6 mark question?)

generally they just confuse me bc it's so simple but i can't figure it out so kind of praying there isnt one on monday but there probably will be 😭
ik its a bit last minute but worth a try asking
wishing everybody luck on monday though ))

I thought the comprehension was alright, it wasn’t as good as the past papers but it definitely could have been a lot worse.

I feel like grammar was the hardest part of it, I could figure out what it meant but I had no clue how to piece some of the bits together.

Did anyone else do prose composition? I thought it was alright, but I made quite a few silly errors looking back so I’m not sure
I couldn’t figure out if the second sentence needed gerundives and I kinda blanked on how to do them so I just rephrased 😬

I agree it could have been worse

i found the grammar questions quite tricky though so i guessed for a few of them, the questions about cases threw me a bit

Do you remember who the author of the passage was? And what text the passage was from

Sallust's Bellum Catalinae 52-55, but it was very adapted.

I actually found it very good! I read the text last summer and spent the past two days doing tons of grammar revision so that was my main two bases covered.
Big relief, considering how awful my verse translation was, and also considering I need an A* to meet my Cambridge offer

omg i did the comprehension, does anyone remember if any questions required interpreting the writer's text, like what sallust conveyed etc? i didn't read the questions thoroughly and just kinda translated the sections of questions in each answer:frown:(((

i do prose composition, i thought some parts were pretty mean, like having to use the gerundive, but i just worked my way around them. vocab was solid and it could've been a lot worse i think!

could you not just use a purpose clause for it? like 'magnam operam imposuerunt ut silvas exciderent et pontes trans flumina aedificaret', or do you reckon you had to use a gerundive

does anyone know how harsh they are with marking - I don't remember exactly what I wrote but it was something like the plan of the wicked men put the city into to great danger instead of the literal translation that the city came into great danger by the plan of the men - would this difference be penalised

i actually asked my teacher just now and she said that shouldnt be penalised because its an intellectual way of translating the latin, remember there are soo many ways to intepret and ancient language! i hope youre not worrying too much, of course examiners are unpredictable so take this with a pinch of salt but well done on getting this paper done i'm sure you're doing amazing:smile:
