Hi,
I'm not an official uni rep or anything, but I have lived in Preston for most of my 40 years.
I can answer any questions you might have about our wonderful city.
My top Preston tips:
Support local independent businesses! You will find your own favourite places, but some of my favourites include-
- Shops - storm cat is a lovely alternative clothes and accessories shop, Action Records is our independent music shop, Preston Market is full of great places, Banana King for your fruit and veg.
-Cafes - Ravenous is a traditional small cafe that does great breakfast, Tea House has hundreds of kinds of herbal tea, Cafune is south American and the upstairs front window is great for people watching, Bruccianis if you want to go back in time, All Hopes No Promises is great for trendy burgers, the scones in Raffles are epic, Kimji for Korean food, Cafe Bar for Italian
Pubs- Vinyl Tap for vinyl records, good beer and live music, Ferret for slightly bigger gigs, New Continental is a bit out of town (a nice walk through Avenham Park though) and does great beer, gigs and lovely if expensive food, Moorbrook a wide selection of well kept beer and excellent pizza, Black Horse got to the top 4 of the Campaign For Real Ale contest for best pub in the UK, Market Tav for Wednesday gay night, Adelphi/Ships and Giggles for student offers and events
People in Preston are very friendly in general, it's a lovely place to live in or near. The Harris museum should be reopen by September and I'm very excited to see the renovation. There is a growing movement to protect and celebrate our historic buildings, which should mean we will have plenty of things to show off well into the future.
A good thing to follow on social media would be Blog Preston - they cover the good, bad and ugly of Preston news pretty well.
There is an active if small lgbtq+ community, mostly based around a discord server. I recommend finding the lgbtq+ Preston meetups page on Facebook to start.
Try a Butter Pie- they are amazing. The spud bros, famous on social media, are based on the flag market in front of the Harris but be aware that they tend to have a massive queue. Nick Park (Wallace and Gromit) is from Preston, as is Andrew "freddie" Flintoff (cricket), Tom Finney (football), Edith Rigby (suffragette) and many other famous figures.
The word "teetotal" was invented in Preston, but that hasn't stopped the thriving beer scene or the vibrant student bars! We have a new city centre cinema, three bowling alleys, and various other options if you want to do something not quite as drink based.
I hope this has helped, but please do ask if you want any more info!
