Uni courses for someone who enjoys biology and chemistry

Hi

I'm currently in year 12 and I'm studying biology, maths, and chemistry. I enjoy all three subjects and recently got A*, A, A in some exams. I want to pursue a career that involves both biology and chemistry. Originally I was thinking Biochemistry, but my bio teacher pretty much said that I would be wasted there.

So, I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for potential courses/subjects to study at university.

If biochem is what really interests you, then ignore your teacher. But other options:

- pharmacy
- pharmacology
- biomedical science
- natural sciences (eg https://courses.leeds.ac.uk/202627/f068/natural-sciences-bsc )
- environmental science (eg https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/courses/environmental-science-bsc-hons-f750/2026/ )
- medicine
- dentistry

Book some uni open days and sign up for a range of course talks. You will soon work out what interests you the most.

Have a look on some University websites - there are numerous STEM subjects open to you, everything from psychology to marine biology, and all the other subjects that do not require any specific A levels such as Law, International Relations, Management etc.

Now is the time to go to some University Open Days and listen to a range of different subject/course presentations and learn about what each course involves, and the sort of career it leads to. And, if you really are not sure about this, just plan a gap year - you could get a job (any job), earn some money and do some travel, and only then decide what you want to do next, and why This is never a waste of time. Nowhere does it say that you can only go to Uni straight from school.

I actually had that thought, too, in S2, and I just googled "biology and chemistry degree," and now I'm in my first year of a biochemistry degree. But there are many options if you like those subjects. You could use World of Work or Prospects. Fabulous websites.

Hey! 🙂
I was in a similar situation and chose to do a chemistry degree and then for my optional module in first year I did cell biology, which then gave me the option if I wish to change to the Chemistry with Drug Discovery course.

You also have options like pharmacy, bio med, medicinal chemistry, etc - best to have a look into it and see what most interests you 😀 - if you have a look on most university websites you should be able to filter by stem courses and you can do a bit of research(: - you still have a lot of time to work it out so try not to stress!

Also would like to add, if you want to do biochemistry - do biochemistry!!!, its your degree, don't feel pressured by others to pick differently - choose what you most want to do (:
Hope this helps
