University of Bath or University of Nottingham for Computer Science Undergrad

Hi, I have received offers from both Bath and Nottingham Universities for Computer Science undergrad program. Will appreciate advise in selecting one over the other. Which is better in terms of ranking overall or subject wise ? And which would be better as a city for social life ?

Hi Anon,

Congrats on your offers from those two great unis!

Your decision is no one's but your own, and its all about choosing the uni which is better for you. Ranking-wise Bath tend to be higher-performing, but rankings are a little arbitrary and will not tell you which uni is best for you.

I would encourage you to prioritise the course contents, the campus vibe and the city. So which out of Bath and Nottingham has the course you think you will find more interesting and enjoyable? Which has modules you think will help you get to any career goals you have? Does the course offer a placement? I know Bath's does, but does Notts have a similar provision? Is this something you'd want to do?

In terms of the campus, where did you feel more at home? Where could you better picture yourself?

As a city Bath is smaller than Notts. However there is quite a lot to it for its little size - it has dozens of nice pubs, a few nightclubs and cocktail bars, a high street surrounded by Georgian architecture, street food stalls and independent coffee and tea shops, plenty of green parks and a lot to see. Bath's also the second-ranked safest city in the UK so this I found very reassuring! Nottingham probably has more in terms of nightlife and has a lower cost of living than Bath. Have you had the chance to visit both?

Have you tried writing a Bath VS Notts pros and cons list to see if one emerges as a winner?

Hoping this helps! Please shout if you have any questions 🙂 and best of luck with your decision.

Do not let rankings decide for you. Some of the criteria of ranking tables may not always be objective, e.g. student satisfaction, employer reputation. Your future should be in your own hands.

Both Bath and Nottingham are good unis. Look into the course modules too see which you like more, particularly look for unique modules that are not commonly offered in other unis.

Nottingham. Its a city - Bath isn't.

(And Bath is as expensive as living in London - Nottingham will be far cheaper)

Hi Anon,

Congratulations on your offers!

I second what Holly from University of Bath says.

I advise you draw yourself up a list of pros and cons for both universities, starting with course content and which aligns best to your interests and which course leads you in the direction you wish to take.

If you haven't been to offer holder or open days, maybe visit the universities and look around the area to see which 'feels' right.

Nottingham is situated in a beautiful setting and there is a small town nearby as well as the city 20 minutes away on the tram.

I hope this helps, it's a difficult decision as both universities have much to offer!! Karen 😊

Bath is a city and has been a city since about 1 AD. It's not as large as Nottingham but it's a city. Bath population about 90,000. Nottingham population about 328,000. You might just be being casual but not everyone will already know. But if your point is just that Nottingham is much larger, yes. Even more so when taking in to account the wider area.

Nottingham is 12th best, Bath 32nd best, in the UK for Computer Science, according to Edurank.

Research quality for it is 88% at Nottingham, 84% at Bath.
Source: The Complete University Guide.

Average entry grades are higher at Bath (86%) than Nottingham (72%, which is still higher than York, which just goes to show how unattractive York Uni can be regarded by many, considering York's research quality is 91% for it) but asking grades, and average entry grades, can partly be a marketing tool to make a university look better (and then the student is more likely to get a high grade regardless of the teaching). Some of the 1960s generation of universities frequently do it (they also often based themselves in ancient cities for the same reason). Whereas the prestige of Nottingham is obvious from the beauty of its campus and the above stats. City-wise, it's generally agreed that Bath is quieter - it's obviously more touristy.
