Primary Education w QTS undergraduate

Hi, has anyone here taken or is currently undertaking a primary education course? How have you found it? Are there a lot of written assignments? Thanks!

I’m not studying Primary Education with QTS, but it’s a great course for those passionate about teaching young children!

Hi Aminah,

My names Tilly and a 2nd year LJMU Education and Primary Studies student. So far I’ve really enjoyed the course as it’s very hands on and I’ve had the opportunity to gain lots of experience in the field during placement and internships. The assignments are a mixture of group presentations, written assignments and creative tasks such as making posters. You are also assessed on your placement, which is a block of time you spend working in a primary school gaining work experience. There are also many opportunities to study abroad during the course, working in schools in Norway and Thailand.

Hope this gives you a little insight into what the course is like. If you have any questions I’d be happy to answer them!

Hi Aminah,

Yes definitely! I think its so important when looking at primary teaching courses, to look for the ones that offer you the opportunity to gain lots of real life experience in the industry. Primary teaching is such a hands on job that there is only so much you can learn from a lecture. It also look great on your CV when you are applying for job after graduation.

Hi @aminah_001

I am currently in my second year of studying Primary Education with QTS and I love it! There is a really good balance between theory in university and placement experiences. Whilst at university, we do lots of practical activities in our sessions which make them really engaging and also have given me lots of ideas for things I could implement into my future classroom. It is also really nice knowing that completing this course (which will give me QTS) will allow me to go directly into teaching.

Most of my assignments have been written, however they are often broken down into sections rather than just being one essay. For example, some of the tasks I have had to do are lesson planning, making an action plan and creating a presentation.

Hope that helps!

Thanks Sophie! Those sessions sound really interesting ! I’m glad everyone has said positive things so far and that the work life balance isn’t too hard.

Hi Aminah!

I graduated from my BA Primary Education with QTS course last year, and absolutely loved my time studying - there was such a good mix between practical on-campus sessions and placement experiences, getting you out into schools working with children!

For info about assignments, I'd recommend visiting some universities at open days and speaking to current students and staff. At Sunderland, our assignments are a mixture of written assignments, creating presentations or posters, and placement portfolios - no exams which is always a big bonus! Every university will be different in how they assess you, so definitely worth speaking to different universities you are interested in to get an understanding of how they work.

Any questions, feel free to get in touch!

Hi Beth! I’m glad you had a really fun time on the course and i’m glad that most unis are doing a mixture of different assignments and not just exams…

I had a question about finding jobs after uni, did you have to network with other schools or did you decide to have a different path?

Thanks Beth

Haha! Yes, most people definitely love hearing when courses have no exams!

This is going to be very dependent on area - for me, I am currently completing a masters in SEND, and teaching part time alongside, at the school I completed my final teaching placement at. I'm currently looking for roles in September, and these will go up in a variety of websites, like your local council and wider job sites.
You'll find a mix of people who may get jobs in their placement schools or people who have applied to a range of other schools to find a job - it can be a 'right time, right place' situation sometimes.

Universities usually have some kind of careers service/on course support - for my uni, we had a 'First Appointments conference' in our final year, where our course leads organised for head teachers, school staff and supply agencies to come in and talk to us about the application/interview process and different opportunities you have after graduation. The wider careers service is also useful for applications, or looking into alternative routes.

Thank you! I hope you’re successful in finding a teaching career in September!! I’ll definitely make sure to look out for careers services in uni or any talks from she cites that happen to come in!

Thanks Beth
