Bath vs Manchester

Hi, I'm about to insure one of these university for MPharm. Since the course would be more or less the same, I'd like to know about the pros and cons of each of the city. Any information would be really helpful! +I'm an international student so access to airport/ease of public transportation will be important as well:smile:

Hi there!

Great to hear you're planning on going into Pharmacy and congrats on your offers!

As you said, in order to get GPhC accreditation the courses will have a certain amount of content in common. So its about deciding which uni and city you'd be happiest in, where you can see yourself living a more fulfilling student life and where you feel most at home.

Manchester is a huge city with a very lively nightlife and a fast pace of life. It has Manchester airport nearby which is a plus, as well as plenty to do and see. Bath, by contrast, is a smaller city where things are slower-paced. It has a lot to it for its size - pubs, a few good nightclubs and cocktail bars, independent coffee houses, street food, a shopping district, green parks, lots to see and is surrounded by old Georgian architecture which gives the place a historic feel. We are 30 mins on the bus away from Bristol international airport as well as only 30 minutes on the rain away from London (giving you access to Heathrow, Luton, Gatwick, Stanstead). Every year on Arrivals week we offer a free coach service from Heathrow airport for new international students to take you right to campus for the start of Freshers week too which is handy!

Pros of Bath:

Beautiful culture and vibe

Second safest city in the UK

Lots to see and do for its size

Great pub scene

Well transport connected with a train station and bus station in the centre

Potential cons of Bath:

Parking in the city is difficult (although this may also be the case for Manchester)

Higher cost of living than some uni cities

campus is on a large hill meaning you need a bus to get to it from the city

Whichever you decide I am sure you will have a fabulous time and a great academic and social experience - its just about finding which uni is the right one for what you want out of the next 3-4 years.

I hope this helps! Best of luck with your choices 🙂

Bath is very expensive and itsa small Uni in a small place,
Bristol airport is miles away and is mostly for holiday flights.

Manchester will be far cheaper and its a far bigger city with much more to do.
The city's trams are fantastic, and the airport is big/efficient.

Hi there,

Congratulations on your offers!

I don't know much about either of these universities, but I just wanted to let you know about a way you can learn more about each of these places. Many universities have UniBuddy, which is a platform you can use to chat to current students, and it's super helpful to be able to talk one-on-one to learn more about their experiences. Often, they will have international students to talk to too, so you can get their perspective which would be useful for you! You can ask about anything, from courses and finance, to campus and the city.

I've linked both Bath and Manchester for you.

I hope this helps,
