ucas extra

I currently hold an offer to study Law at the University of Warwick. However, I’ve realised that I want to study a different course Comparative Literature and that I also don't want to go to Warwick. I contacted both UCL and King’s College London to enquire about applying for this course through UCAS Extra. They informed me that they only accept my existing (Law) personal statement and do not allow for an alternative version tailored to the new course, meaning there is no guarantee I would receive an offer.

I’m a bit confused about how course changes typically work during Clearing. If universities don’t accept alternative personal statements, how do applicants successfully switch courses after results day?

Additionally, I wanted to ask whether you think it would be worth taking the risk and applying for Comparative Literature through UCAS Extra despite my Law personal statement. If I were to be rejected through UCAS Extra, would I still be able to apply for the same course through Clearing?

The majority of clearing places don't use a PS for selection at all, just grades that meet the cleaing requirements.

This depends whether you are holding any offers you might want to take up. If not, there's not really any risk.

There's no reason you can't apply again, but I would say it would be unsual for a uni to reject you via Extra and then make you go around the houses of applying via clearing to give you an offer.

i understand i can go through the clearing route when the time comes, but before that, do u think it's worth taking the risk by applying through UCAS Extra? - When I called ,UCL the admissions team were so useless, they just said that my PS (law) is unrelated, so there's no guarantee i'd get an offer for comparative lit.

Are you holding any offers now that you genuinely might want to take up?

Then there’s zero risk from declining offers you don’t want to use Extra now
Extra works almost exactly like clearing except it’s less rushed and universities can make conditional offers. It’s less risky than clearing not more risky.

Then as above there is no risk in declining your current offers to use Extra. Worst case, you don’t get offers and end up using clearing anyway.

NB. I am assuming any unis that you have received offers from don’t also offer comparative literature?

But do you think it’s true that they will read my law ps and then disregard my application because it’s law focused or is that not really a concern?
Alsooo if they were to reject me now before clearing, could I call ucl and apply through clearing anyway?
