Paramedic science or nursing

Hi I am unsure of which uni course to apply for either paramedic science or nursing.
I am 40 and feel I maybe too old to do either.
Can any mature students help…..
Thanks

Hey, :hello:

You are never too old, many universities and especially health degrees have mature students.

If you are unsure on whether you should apply for paramedic science or nursing i would recommend you attend some open days at different universities. By attending an open day you will be able to find out more about each course by chatting and asking questions to the lecturers, current students and check out the teaching facilities. By attending an open day it will help you make up your mind. However, you will be able to apply for both and then see what offers you get.

Many universities will have open days in the summer check out their websites to find out when they are!

I hope this helps and good luck on your search for the right course for you.

Hey there! I’m 40 so just thought I would give you my opinion. I decided I didn’t want to go back to dental nursing after having my kids, like the thought of it made me shudder haha. So I decided to pursue adult nursing. I’m just finishing my Access course to start Adult Nursing in September. Although at times I think to myself ‘what am I doing??’ Other times I’m happy I’ve 2 years behind me already. I say for for it. Will you have to do an Access course?

You are definitely not too old. You have 20+ years of working life ahead of you and valuable life experience to give to the role. Mature students make excellent health students because they are often good at prioritising and time management, managing stress - making them calmer under pressure and more resilient (essential in both roles which are high in emotional labour). Nursing attracts a lot of mature students, particularly 40+, probably more so than any other healthcare course. Some universities/courses attract a higher proportion of mature students than others, so ask that question at open days, whichever course you go for.

Nurses & paramedics (all registered HCP) have CPD and lifelong learning as requirements of professional registration - at 40 and going into university-level study you're demonstrating that you're still intellectually curious and committed to your personal development. That will stand you in good stead for a career where you have to stay abreast of the latest evidence relating to your practice.

Hi there. I start uni in September at 38 for mental health nursing. I did the access course and a one of my friends on there have got a place on parascience the rest are all nursing. Parascience is a lot more competitive I’ve found so id recommend going some research on the unis and what is needed to enrol etc.

I turn 35 in October and I’ve nearly finished my access to nursing course. I’m going to start my degree in midwifery in September.
Never too old! I think in the health sciences it’s really
Common to have mature students!
You can do this!

Hey 👋. I'm 36 and starting NTU in September to study Paramedic Science. I was worried about being older but tbh when I did the open days it was a mix of ages. I think medicine does attract more mature students.
If it's what you want to do, go for it. Life's too short 😀
