Psychology then paramedic science?

I've got an offer to study Psychology in September at a uni I really like, however I've recently been debating taking a gap year and applying for Paramedic Science next year. I was set on going to uni to become a Clinical Psychologist, but I now want to pursue Paramedics more (which was my plan when I started A-levels). Psychology still interests me, so I was thinking about going to uni for Psychology and applying for Paramedic Science after my degree, as I still want to have the option of Psychology, but I'm uncertain as to whether this is the best thing to do.

Hey, :hello:

It can be very difficult to decide what course you want to do at university.

As you are still unsure on what to do i would recommend attending some open days for paramedic science too. This way you should hopefully make up your mind on what degree is for you. You will be able to find out more about the course by chatting to academics, current students and checking out the facilities. Psychology and Paramedic Science are very different degrees.

Many universities will have open days this summer so make sure to check out their websites to book on!

If you decide to pursue with paramedic science you can see if any universities have spaces through clearing after A-level results day or take a gap year and apply for 2026 start. If you decide to stick with Psychology you can stay with your current application.

You must have an interest in paramedic science to consider it so i would recommend finding out more to make sure you are making the right decision for you!

I hope that helps.

Paramdedic science isn't classed as an exception course so if you wanted to study it as a second degree you would need to think about how to fund it.

My understanding is that at present, Paramedic Science is not funded as a second degree course. Currently, some healthcare courses are funded by the Student Loans Company as a second degree (so you could do Psychology BSc then go onto do a health care degree with funding from SLC) but Paramedic Science is not currently one of the courses that attracts funding as a second degree.

This means that if you complete do Psychology first, you will need to fund the entire Paramedic degree yourself (fees + living costs for all the years of the course).

I believe there may be some apprenticeship courses to become a paramedic but I would recommend doing some research to check if this is likely to be a viable route for you if you decide to do a Psychology degree course first.

The Open University offers an online Psychology BSc degree that could potentially attract funding as a second degree: Tuition Fee Loans For Degree Holders | Fees and Funding | The Open University so you could do Paramedic Science first and then do Psychology later if you wish to (although the rules around funding all degrees are subject to frequent change).

It may be worth thinking in detail about your options so you can make the best decision about what degree you wish to pursue, to get to where you want to be. Open days and research, talking to paramedics etc. may be helpful for you to help narrow down if this is what you want to do, and if so, how best to get there.
