URGENT! Can I still change GCSE Tier? - Yr11

Hi,
My science teacher has put me down to take the foundation AQA GCSE biology, Chemistry and Physics exam.
Over the Easter break, I worked really hard and I’ve been doing loads of higher exam papers and getting top grades too.
However, before the Easter break I was really bad at science in school thus I used to get low grades. My teacher still thinks I’m bad at science.
I was supposed to have science today and I thought that I would bring all the work I’ve done and show it to her and ask her to switch me to higher. However, I had an appointment and I couldn’t attend.
My next lesson would be on Monday.
But, for physics I have it tomorrow too (different teacher, same problem!) so I am hoping to have a discussion with my physics teacher and I’ll show my work and ask her to move me to higher.

I’m really scared that they are going to say that I can’t do higher.
I’ve got my heart set on getting those 8s and 9s.
I’m extremely stressed.
Can the changes still be made to the tier? - I think that I will have to may an extra fees (around £50?) but I am willing to do that.

And, is having the discussion on Monday going to be too late or is it ok (for chem and bio)?

Alternatively, could I go to the exams officer and ask them to change the tier and tell her how dedicated I am now? Or, does the teacher only get to decide?

Hi Grace!

I would definitely ask teachers and the exam officer.

Well done on working so hard and pushing yourself!

You should be super proud of yourself,

Hi Katy,
Thank you for your response. It really means a lot to me.
Apologies for asking so many questions, but I just want to clear some stuff as I’m getting really stressed.
Tomorrow I have physics so I’ll talk to my physics teacher. However, as my chem/bio teacher won’t be in tomorrow. Shall I talk to my physics teacher and ask her to pass the message onto my other teacher or go directly to the exams officer or wait until Monday?
My school had mentioned that the final date for telling them about any changes needed on the exam timetable is 28/04, so I’m a bit unsure as to what I should do.
Thank you once again!

Amending an entry this late will cost the school a lot of money. How will your teachers know you did the work? Be prepared to sit a test or for them to say 'No'.

Yes, so I will be taking my revision with me to school. If they want me to sit a test, I will. Also, I am willing to pay any late entry fees.

Good luck.

I think the process is called 'amending an entry' - you can look it up on the exam board website.

Thank you.
My chem/bio teacher is not in on Fridays and I'm hoping that my Physics teacher will be in.
However, if I do not get to have the discussion about changing the tier tomorrow, do you think it would still be ok for me to discuss it with them on Monday?
My school did state that the final deadline for any amendments to the exam timetable is 28/04. However, I believe that on the AQA website it has not stated a specific date for tier changes.
Any guidance on what my next steps should be would be highly appreciated.
Thank you once again.

Page 6 says amendment fee applies after 21st April ....

I would say the sooner you raise this the better but they may just say 'No'.

I understand. Thank you.
I’ll have a discussion on Monday with them as my physics teacher is also not in today :frown:

What would be their reasons for saying ‘No’ if, as the person taking the exam, I know that I’ve learned all the content to a high standard over Easter, been able to apply that knowledge with grace 8-9 questions, and have also achieved 8s and 9s in the past papers I’ve completed? I’m just curious.
Thank you once again, I highly appreciate all your guidance.

The reason for saying 'No' would be a concern that this improvement you claim is very late and they don't want you to fail.

If you were in my Maths class I'd make you do a paper from the unreleased ones so I could be sure you are likely to get 5+. Also if you are in a Foundation set then how will you access the right revision lessons?

Can you speak to the exams officer, your tutor or head of year today?

Right, I see. Thank you for explaining it.
I agree with you about sitting the unreleased papers.
In my school foundation and higher students are in the same class for science, so we are also taught the higher content but just told that we won’t need it in our exam so we shouldn’t revise it.
