The Student Room Group

Are these extracurriculars this enough

The extracurriculars that I have done are:

- Volunteering at a school for six months
- Virtual work experience in pharmacy
- Virtual work experience in hospitals
- Virtual work experience in primary care
- Access project member
- Have an online business
- Have done a two week course on finding cancer medications
- Was part of school council, football team and cricket team in secondary school
- Attended a 'get into medicine' conference
- Read medical related books

Things that I haven't already done but am likely to do in addition to the above is:

- a university masterclass related to medicine
- volunteering at a care home
- part time job (completely unrelated to medicine - likely in retail)

Is what I have already completed enough or would I have to do the things that were mentioned in the second list aswell for it to be enough. Or would I have to do a lot more than mentioned above. I am in yr12 btw.

Cambridge; 'you’re strongly advised (though not required) to undertake relevant work experience, either paid or voluntary, in a health or social care organisation' KCL; 'They normally expect you to have undertaken some work experience in a caring environment and/or observation in a medical clinical setting. If this has not been possible, they look for evidence that you have worked in a setting where you interacted with the general public, e.g. in a pharmacy or restaurant.' Lancaster; 'It is important that you have some relevant work experience to help you decide if Medicine is the right career path for you. This does not have to be shadowing a Doctor but can be any experience (unpaid work, paid work or volunteering) within a healthcare setting that gives you an insight into what it is like to be a Doctor today.' Volunteering at a care home is a really good idea, the virtual stuff is great unis are starting to recognise its hard for a lot of people do get experience in a practice/hospital, if you can try reach out to some local practices to shadow someone that'd be a good idea too. Well done in working at getting lots done I'm sure the experience you have and plan to get can be applied to why you want to do medicine giving you a very strong application!

Thanks a lot. Very helpful! I will try to reach out to a few practices I live by and the local hospital.
