Should I insure Durham or Birmingham for CS?

I've gotten Bristol, Durham and Birmingham as offers for Computer Science. I intend on firming Bristol. Bristol and Durham have identical grade requirements, whilst Birmingham is slightly lower, which means I have to put either Durham or Birmingham as my insurance choice. My school told me that your insurance choice should be lower (not the same) in grade requirements to your firm, which implies that I should insure Birmingham rather than Durham, but I'm not sure about doing this because I prefer Durham over Birmingham as a university.

What should I do pls help ;-;
Hi there,

Really good to hear you've decided on Bristol as your firm - great choice for the subject (plus Bath is only a 30 min bus ride away if you wanted to visit a smaller city with a slower pace!)

This is a difficult one. In theory, your insurance choice should be a lower grade requirement than your firm. This is to give you a safety net for results day. If your F and I have identical requirements then you run the risk of not getting a place at all if you miss your grades - how would this make you feel? Would you be prepared to go through clearing or reapply next year? Whereas, if you insured Birmingham then if you miss just one grade or so then you could still get in.

I would recommend on this basis to insure Birmingham, as long as you'd still be happy there studying that course. If you really like Durham however, is it worth considering firming it over Bristol? Absolutely fine if you've already made up your mind.

Its a difficult decision but I'd advise to opt for safety rather than preference when it comes to insurance choices.

I hope this helped a bit, best of luck and please let us know if you have any questions 🙂

You need to put Birmingham as insurance then. It does not make sense to have the other two firmed because if you get the grades you will go to firm, if not then you wont get either anyway. I study cs at durham university btw.
As above, safety would likely be better than preference. It has been said on the site a few times that Durham don't particularly treat their insurance applicants in the nicest way in terms of confirmation (in the period around results day.

You obviously like Birmingham somewhat, as you've picked it as an option when applying.
