KCL or UoB (Birmingham) for uni?

I’m in a strange situation.

I’ve applied to both uni’s for pharmacy (MPharm) in December. I immediately received an interview from UoB and it went well, and shortly after the interview I was given an offer. The other day, KCL told me to check King’s Apply (it’s like their own website where they deal with applications) and I was rejected due to competition, however they gave me an alternative offer for pharmacology (BSc).

This is some information on studying pharmacy in the UK: to be a pharmacist in the UK you must have an MPharm degree that is accredited by the GPhC (basically the governing body of pharmacists in the UK). The GPhC do not allow you to work as a pharmacist if you do not have an MPharm degree (even if you have a PhD). Despite the MPharm degree being a master’s, it is an undergraduate degree and cannot be studied post-graduate. This means if I choose to study at KCL, I can not and will not be able to be a pharmacist in the UK ever.

As much as I like pharmacy, I am not adamant on becoming a pharmacist. However, pharmacists do make a good salary and there are many pharmacist vacancies available. There are almost zero pharmacologist vacancies, and the ones there are have a very low pay. It’s almost a given that if I study pharmacology at KCL, I must study for a post-graduate degree after I graduate. Whilst this means I have to study for more years, it opens new doors as my post-graduate degree can be in a different subject that could have either more vacancies or a better pay. I feel like choosing to study at KCL is more risky for my future, but could also be more beneficial.

At the end of the day I’m not too stressed about it as they are both very good uni’s, but I still don’t know which one to firm. Which one should I choose? What things should I consider??

i wouldn’t study pharmacology it’s dead. pharmacy is much harder though but it’s worth it. birmingham is still a very good university so it’s definitely better to go with that. if you studied pharmacology you wouldn’t have much job options. you got an offer for pharmacy so definitely take it. no one would choose to do pharmacology unless they had no other option.

I’ve been speaking to all my friends about it and they’re all saying Birmingham too. It’s the more sensible option so I guess I don’t really have a choice…
