Part-time Job During PGCE

Just wondering if anyone who’s doing or has done a PGCE has been able to work a part-time job alongside it? I was considering doing a 6-10pm shift every Monday during the year.

I'm also interested in this as I could work for my old company part time but not sure I'll get the time as I've heard it's an intense year

Balancing a part-time job alongside the PGCE can be quite challenging due to the heavy workload. Working one day over the weekend is usually manageable. In your case, doing a shift on Monday from 6pm to 10pm during the early weeks of Placement 1 should be fine. However, bear in mind that the demands increase significantly as the course progresses—especially during Placement 2, where you’ll be teaching up to 80% of a full timetable.
In short, it might be manageable for the first few weeks, but teaching is a physically and mentally demanding job. You’ll need time to rest and plan, especially if you're unable to do so during school hours. So while it may work in the short term, you’ll likely find it increasingly difficult to maintain.
