How to do a higher English critical essay?

Hello,

Last year, I performed very well in my critical essay. Unfortunately, I'm a bit lost when it comes to writing a critical essay this year, especially for something like Higher English.

What's the structure for a critical essay?

This year we are doing Valentine by Carol Ann Duffy.
Not my favourite prom compared to Assisi.

Thanks.

Any help is appreciated.

hi, are you doing Valentine for your critical essay? and what type of text did you do your essay on last year?
For me - im doing a novel so i’m not sure if i’m much help, but i’ve memorised a basic essay covering all parts of the novel. Then depending on the essay question, i add on a little bit at the end of each paragraph linking it back to the essay question. For prose fictions (what i’m doing) it’s usually 3 different types of essays: character, theme and setting. It depends on the different, commonly asked questions for poetry but i guess just have a strong analysis using whatever structure they taught you (e.g. PEA, point example analysis)
Sorry if it’s not much help, good luck studying
