After receiving my offer, how long until I am assigned a college?

I received my offer last week for MPhil. How long until I am assigned a college? And after that, when is housing chosen?

Hi!

Congrats on your offer!!

I believe it usually take 2-6 weeks to assign you to a college, however it depends so maybe contact them as they will probably know!

Housing normally happens a few weeks after your assignment so again just ring them I’m sure they will have all the info you need!!

Hope this helps!

Thanks Katy-
Is housing guaranteed for graduate students? I am international and not familiar at all with how Cambridge assigns housing. Do I have get a lottery number and then do housing choices/ assignments happen on a specific day through a portal? Or is it first come/ first served?

Katy's answer wasn't related to Cambridge. You will get a College at some point. The timing depends what choices you put down, how they work their application review process, and which Colleges. It can take anything from a few days to 8 weeks, usually about 4 weeks though.

Accommodation depends entirely on which College. They all have their own methods, but most don't bother doing anything until later int he summer when you have confirmed your place. They may not allocate and tell you where you are until just before you arrive. Different Colleges have different housing resources and different rules on who gets priority. So until you know your College, no-one can say how accommodation will work, and even then, it's best to email the MCR, because outside the College, no-one is likely to know the details.

Thank you for this answer. Am I correct to understand that the college will most likely assign me to housing, rather than me choosing it? I am coming from the US and the campus housing can be quite competitive and after freshman year, the students choose their rooms/ housing based on a lottery system. I am just trying to prepare for what the next few months might look like in terms of planning my move to the UK

First year - the College will allocate, fitting as best it can with the preference you have expressed in any form they send you. Second and Third years, Colleges have ballots, but these are based on student devised rules, and each College differs. Cambridge college offer undergrad accommodation for all 3 years.

Thanks- I am going to be an MPhil student and my program is only one year. Do they still guarantee housing for post grads?

From what i've researched, its not 100% guaranteed, its up to the college your in to assign you these things so it's not essentially like a lottery ticket.

I can try find more info if you can tell me which college your in as every college has a different way! I would also advise that you contact that college as they will definitely know these questions!

Hope this helps,

No, they don't, but again, the chances of getting accommodation and the options are College specific, so you need to read your College MCR website or ask your College.
