A level subject choice help

Im going into collage this year and im thinking of going into nursing. The A levels i was thinking of doing are English Literature, Sociology and Health and social care. But I dont know if doing Psychology, Sociology and Health and social care would be a better combination. Or does it not really make a difference?

Seems like you need Biology for a nursing degree.

Hi @beadaabest,

If you're aiming to become a nurse through the university route, you can choose whichever A-Levels you enjoy and feel confident in. Most universities mainly require you to meet the overall grade requirements (they don’t usually specify particular A-Level subjects for nursing) and to have passed your GCSEs in Maths and English (and sometimes Science).

Both combinations you mentioned English Literature, Sociology, and Health and Social Care, or Psychology, Sociology, and Health and Social Care would be perfectly fine for our nursing entry requirements for example. It’s more important to pick subjects you enjoy and will do well in!

Hope that helps, and good luck with your choices! 🙂

Just in terms of actually doing the courses I do the psych combo and I’m really really enjoying it they have a nice amount of overlap but are different as well. A lot depends on teaching esp hsc so ask around abt the college ur going to go to. Also worth looking at entry requirements for uni courses/degree apprenticeships!
Hey, @always-anxious!

I think you can tell in what branches and studies psychology and sociology are useful as A levels. Just wonder, if nursing counts to it.

Hey there,

My name is Siobhan and I'm a third year physiotherapy student at the Universit of Central Lancashire. This is a great question and it's nice to see you taking an interest in Nursing, i've heard it's a brilliant course and degree 🙂

The good thing about healthcare is that typically you may only need one or two alevels directly linked to the course such as a science or health related choice and it sounds like you already do have options that link well to the degree. However, it can be very uni specific as each place will have its own criteria. I would recommend that the best option is the have a look on UCAS and have a browse around which uni's you like and what they expect if you in terms of entry requirements.

You can also have a look on the uni specific websites where it should say in more detail about the course and requirements. Good luck 🙂

Hope this helps and please let me know if I can help in any other way

Siobhan (Student Ambassador for the University of Central Lancashire)
